Job Purpose:Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating,water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbingcodes. Essential Duties and/or Responsibilities: Measure, cut, thread,and bend pipe to required angle, using hand and power tools or machinessuch as pipe cutters, pipe-threading machines, and pipe-bendingmachines. Study building plans and inspect structures to assess materialand equipment needs, to establish the sequence of pipe installations,and to plan installation around obstructions such as electrical wiring.Locate and mark the position of pipe installations, connections, passageholes, and fixtures in structures, using measuring instruments such asrulers and levels. Fill pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air andobserve pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks. Assemble pipesections, tubing and fittings, using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts,cement, plastic solvent, caulking, or soldering, brazing and weldingequipment. Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, appliances such asdishwashers and water heaters, and fixtures such as sinks and toilets,using hand and power tools. Direct workers engaged in pipe cutting andpreassembly and installation of plumbing systems and components. Cutopenings in structures to accommodate pipes and pipe fittings, usinghand and power tools. Review blueprints and building codes andspecifications to determine work details and procedures. Installunderground storm, sanitary and water piping systems and extend pipingto connect fixtures and plumbing to these systems. Repair and maintainplumbing, replacing defective washers, replacing or mending brokenpipes, and opening clogged drains. Keep records of assignments andproduce detailed work reports.
