Our work is supported by a portfolio of peer-reviewed grants, industrial agreements and research endowments.

  We are seeking a Life Science Research Professional (LSRP) 1 to perform experiments and support activities in the context of an IMA-supported research effort to develop novel inhibitors of MYC oncogene activity. The Felsher Laboratory is a translational cancer research group in the Division of Oncology. The work of the Division of Oncology bridges the worlds of basic science, clinical diagnosis and the treatment of cancer. Our basic investigative activities concentrate on immunology, genetics/genomics, pharmacology, DNA repair and oncogene action. Our clinical science covers each cancer type; has a strong focus in clinical trials of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, and in correlative laboratory studies. The Oncology Division’s work is supported by a portfolio of peer-reviewed grants, industrial agreements and research endowments. The Felsher laboratory is focusing on creative approaches to identifying and developing novel therapeutics targeting the MYC oncogene and MYC synthetic-lethal interactions. The successful candidate will perform biochemical, biophysical, and cell biological experiments that interface with ongoing small molecule and peptide screening efforts in the laboratory. Previous experience working in a laboratory setting devoted to molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry is strongly preferred but not required, as the position includes a training and professional development component. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify new treatments for human cancer. The LSRP role is highly collaborative with opportunities for independent work that contributes new capabilities to long-term efforts in the laboratory. The Laboratory is part of a recently initiated focus group consisting of four Stanford research labs that share the common goal to develop novel MYC therapeutics. In this context, the LSRP will have the opportunity to interact with this network of investigators from different disciplines. Specifically, the LSRP will be involved in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary research project and will have the opportunity to interact with the Gray Laboratory which is part of the Stanford Cancer Institute (SCI). The SCI is one of an elite number of National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country, and is a prominent, dynamic, growing, and complex Institute within the Stanford University School of Medicine. The SCI actively works to build synergies and collaborations among faculty with cancer-relevant expertise from four Schools and over 30 departments across Stanford University.

  Duties include:

  Plan approach to experiments in support of research projects in lab and/or field based on knowledge of scientific theory.

  Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with senior researcher.

  Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to related research.

  Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.

  Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

  DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  The desired candidate should have experience in a molecular biology or biochemistry lab setting. A bachelor’s degree in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology or biophysics is preferred. Candidates with at least one year of relevant experience and/or a master’s degree or equivalent are preferred. Desirable capabilities include cell and tissue culture, molecular biology, protein biochemistry such as Western blotting, cell-based assay design and optimization, and any related biochemical or cell biological methods. Bioinformatics experience and prior experience in working with mice are a plus.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

  Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.

  Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.

  Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.

  Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.

  Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.

  Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.

  Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.

  Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.

  Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

  Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

  Position may require repetitive motion.

  WORKING CONDITIONS:

  May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens.

  Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator.

  The expected pay range for this position is $53,000 to $76,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
