  Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

  $33.946 - $43.802 - $53.657

  The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.

  What You Will Do

  Assists patients, staff and physicians as needed to maintain a high level of efficiency of operations and customer service while providing quality care to a designated patient population. The Lead Ortho Tech performs duties at an expert level in the operating room and clinic setting under the direction of the Orthopedic Surgeon. Assists the Supervisor and Patient Care Manager with the leadership and day-today organization of the technical and support staff.

  Required Qualifications

  Completion of orthopedic technology program or other equivalent program (such as military training program).

  5 Years Full-time work experience in a hospital, clinic or office setting or as an independent contractor working directly in the care of orthopedics patients, and certified by NBCOT for no fewer than two years.

  Clinical skillsDemonstrates advanced knowledge and skill level within scope of practice.Fully successful in performing/assisting with all tests and procedures in assigned department.Able to prepare patient for examination or procedure. Obtains complete and accurate consent for procedures/surgery. Prepares and labels biopsies in a thorough and accurate manner.Accurately documents patient care per protocol.Listens to patients, collects pertinent information, recognizes the urgency of the patient's problem and routes to physicians.Returns phone calls according to physician instruction. May schedule patient appointments.In partnership with physician, provides specific educational material and individual teaching.Uses universal precautions and demonstrates knowledge of infection control policies and procedures.Provides assistance to PSRs in resolving issues related to front desk responsibilities including scheduling and telephone management. Acts as a positive role model and ensures appropriate service delivery. Participates in clinical projects as directed by the physician or manager.Partners with physicians to continuously learn and expand clinical knowledge base.Utilizes proper casting techniques, instructing patients in cast care and danger signs. Anticipates physician needs. Provides surgical assistant support in the operating room and assists with office procedures.Utilizes proper aseptic techniques, equipment set-ups, patient transfers and proper patient positioning.Assures operating room suite has proper equipment, x-rays, surgical pallets and reports.Assists with general office/patient functions: 1) Assist with patient phone calls; 2) Assists with ordering.

  Department efficiency and effectivenessOrganizes and completes daily requirements and responsibilities.Telephone Message Management - Ensures prompt and efficient return of messages according to established policy. Troubleshoots and resolves problem calls.Daily Organization - Monitors patient flow, physician schedules and completes daily tasks to ensure quality and meet service standards.Monitors coverage throughout the clinic day assuring lunch coverage is needed. Adjusts tech staffing as needed.Follows policy and procedure for entering of OCM and utilization of IDX. Completes work within assigned hours. Able to respond to changing circumstances and prioritize patient needs.Responds to urgent and emergent situations in a calm and capable manner. Utilizes good judgment and problem solving ability.Ensures readiness of reports and information to maximize patient visit.Maintains appropriate supply levels. Cost conscious in usage.Orders supplies to maintain par levels and stock rooms on a daily basis. Participates in and prepares for site inspections and inventories.Completes department inventories per guidelines.Assists in other departments as assigned to meet staffing needs. Assists with the revision of Orthopedic Tech policies and procedures.

  LeadershipNew Hires and Orientation - Participates in or completes initial screening interview and schedules final candidates with Patient Care Supervisor or Manager and physician for final hiring decision. Completes paperwork and submits training calendar and skills roster within 90 days. Oversees orientation of new employees to assure appropriate clinical performance and service delivery.Staff training and development - Assists in scheduling and organizing clinical and technical in-services, customer service inservices, mock codes, and pharmacy fairs. Provides ongoing clinical and service support and supervision.Corrective Action - Promptly brings to the attention of the supervisor or manager performance issues needing to be addressed. Works with Supervisor or Manager to follow corrective action process as delineated by Human Resources policy and procedure. Coaches and counsels as needed.Evaluations - Assists the patient care supervisor to communicate performance expectations to staff, assesses developmental needs and initiates action plans to address issues and build skills. Assists in the preparation, distribution and collection of pre-evaluation paperwork.Leadership - Consistently pro-active in team development and in problem-solving to meet department goals. Actively and positively strives to implement departmental goals and support changes. Acts as a resource and role model for staff. Facilitates interdepartmental cooperation and teamwork. Adheres to Sharp HealthCare standards of conduct.

  Quality initiativesCompletes Quality Assurance (QA) assignments and ensures overall department compliance with requirements. QA scores: 96- 100% = Great; 90-95% = Good; 90% and below = Needs Improvement.

  Skills competenciesSuccessfully completes Skills Competencies with a score of 90% or greater in each section = Great. Successfully completes Skills Competencies with a score of 90% or greater on all but one section. Passed on retesting = Good. Unsuccessful in passing more than one section of Skills Competency Testing and/or failed to pass testing on second attempt = Needs Improvement.

  Technical skillsDemonstrates knowledge of equipment and Information Systems applications. Able to activate emergency procedure per protocol - code, fire, etc.Documents patient care events in a thorough and accurate manner. Manages and completes AEHR tasks per prescribed time lines.Support and knowledge of new applications and policies: AEHR, Abbreviations, etc.Demonstrate typing skills proficiency by: using a keyboard, required to type proficiently and accurately; have the ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute with 0-2 errors; have the ability to proof work.Knowledge of scheduling requirements and support of front desk responsibilities. Able to operate and maintain department equipment.

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  Demonstrated proficiency in application of casts, splints and braces.

  Knowledge of major and minor orthopedic surgical procedures and techniques, table set-up, patient positioning and sterile techniques.

  Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions bases on advanced understanding of anatomical structures and relationships with one another.

  Advanced knowledge of theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual tractions.

  Proper application of aseptic techniques in dressing changes, removal of sutures, staples, Steinman pins, K-wires, ability to set up surgical fields and draping in the operating room.

  Interpretation of x-rays, identifying most fractures and dislocations.

  Perform in the operating room environment in an expert manner as first and second assistant or scrub technician, under the direct supervision of a surgeon. Completion of Ortho Tech II checklist.

  The ability to type 30 words per minute with 0-2 errors.
