JOB REQUIREMENTS: Duties Monitors the status and progress of work andday-to-day adjustments IAW established priorities. Instructs employeesin specific tasks and job techniques and makes available writteninstructions, reference materials and supplies. Gives on the jobtraining to new coders and students with the basic knowledge, skill andability to perform the full range of routine and non-routineresponsibilities required. Trains and works closely with professionaland administrative staff to assist in the development, maintenance andusage of ICD and CPT codes to ensure accurate data capture. Conforms tostandards and participates in the technical evaluation and validation ofhealth records for compliance with The Joint Commission requirements,Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and/or health recorddocumentation guidelines. Distributes and balance the workload amongemployees IAW established workflow or job specialization, assures timelyaccomplishment of the assigned workload. Analyzes and recommendsimprovements in documentation systems used to provide patient care tooptimize VERA workload, third-party reimbursement, and to manageresources. Reviews compliance monitors and identifies training needs.Reviews, audits, trains, monitors and completes special assignmentswithin specified time frames. Identifies training needs of individualsbased on productivity and accuracy reports, rejects from billing, andspot checks. Makes recommendations to supervisor concerning disciplinaryactions due to insufficient performance and identifies continuingeducation needs. Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters(inpatient and/or outpatient) covering the full range of health careservices provided by the VAMC. Applies advanced knowledge of medicalterminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatmentmodalities, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures as well as theprinciples and practices of health services and the organizationalstructure to ensure proper code selection. Selects and assigns codesfrom the current version of several coding systems to include currentversions of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), CurrentProcedural Terminology (CPT), and/or Healthcare Common Procedure CodingSystem (HCPCS). Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines andconventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation,procedure, ancillary, or evaluation and management (E/M) code to ensureethical, accurate, and complete coding.
