  Description of Work Unit

  CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science-based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.

  Position Summary

  A Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance ( LRAM ) Equipment Operator (Technical/Support I) position is available at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin with Colorado State University ( CSU ) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ). The position will work with and support the Integrated Training Area Management ( ITAM ) Program at Fort McCoy. This position will help sustain realistic training land conditions and support the mission requirements for units at the installation.

  Fort McCoy is a United States Army Reserve installation located between Sparta and Tomah, Wisconsin. The 60,000-acre installation hosts a variety of diverse training habitats including forest and prairie ecosystems. The area has warm summers and cold winters. The installation supports year-round training from all branches of the armed services in a variety of realistic training scenarios.

  Required Job Qualifications

  Minimum requirements include:

  A High School Diploma, General Education Development ( GED ), or equivalent required.

  Experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., dump trucks, dozers, graders, loaders, excavator, mowers, agricultural tractors, backhoes, seed drills, hydro mulchers, forestry mulchers) to maintain, repair, and improve training lands, trails, and roads.

  Experience performing preventative maintenance on heavy equipment (e.g., greasing, checking and maintaining fluids, maintaining hoses, completing oil changes, changing and maintaining filters, other general in-field repairs).

  Ability to maneuver equipment in confined areas.

  Possess basic knowledge of terrain and soil composition to determine approach for equipment.

  Ability to read and navigate using maps, GIS applications, aerial photographs, compasses, and GPS units.

  Physically able to work outdoors and perform strenuous labor under all hazardous working conditions (e.g., intense heat, cold, high humidity, noxious plants and animals).

  Be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly without assistance.

  Be able to follow directions, work collaboratively with others as part of a team, and maintain safe working standards.

  Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.

  The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

  Preferred Job Qualifications

  Preferred qualifications include:

  A valid Class A or B commercial driver’s license ( CDL ), with no manual transmission restrictions along with associated medical records.

  A minimum of six continuous months of specialized experience in land rehabilitation, land management, and the use of equipment typically associated with land rehabilitation projects.

  Experience with the use and application of Best Management Practices ( BMP ) for soil conservation, erosion control, and vegetation management.

  Experience working on military installations.

  Experience working in a highly structured organization and knowledge of Army Instructions, directives, guidance, and processes.

  Experience with programs similar to LRAM and ITAM .

  Experience operating chainsaws, tree trimmers, and weed whacker style hand operated power tools.

  Pesticide/herbicide application experience and experience in invasive species management.

  Experience loading and hauling mechanized equipment.

  Incumbent will support the overall training mission and the ITAM program at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, through Land Rehabilitation Management duties that include:

  Enhancing the safe use of training ranges and facilities, sustaining the overall training land condition, improving off-road safety and access to training lands, and increasing the net use of training lands.

  Improving operational safety and tactical mobility through the use of vegetation management techniques.

  Completing site restoration include digging, trenching, grading, seeding, watering, clearing dry/dead vegetation, etc.

  Duty/Responsibility

  Operate/Maintain Light and Heavy Equipment for Land Rehabilitation by:

  Heavy equipment operation for the purpose of completing assigned LRAM project execution tasks.

  Equipment operated includes but is not limited to: 10 to 25 ton dump trucks, dozers, motor graders, front-end loaders, agricultural tractors, vibratory compactors, scrapers, forestry mowers/mulchers, track hoes, excavator and backhoes.

  Equipment operation is done in support of providing safe and sustainable training lands.

  Conclusions will need to be reached on what type of equipment is most appropriate for the job and how best to locate the equipment at the job site.

  Using various other pieces of equipment (e.g., hydro mulcher, aero mulcher, seed drills, mowers, weed whacker, chainsaw).

  Perform maintenance and inspections on equipment operated for operational readiness and safety.

  Perform routine maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in good working condition such as changing tires, inspecting, greasing, and cleaning equipment, track tightening, checking and replenishing fluids to proper levels, examining and changing filters, changing and sharpening blades, changing/replacing batteries, lubricating equipment, calibrating equipment and performing related tasks.

  Follow time schedules and understand signals to identify when maintenance is necessary.

  Perform and document comprehensive pre-trip inspections on heavy equipment, dump trucks, pick-up trucks and tractors/trailers including but not limited to formal operating systems and airbrake checks.

  Read and follow manufacturer’s instructions and safety manuals for operation of heavy equipment and power tools.

  Use proper techniques to lift and carry heavy objects.

  Follow verbal and/or written instructions from supervisor to complete both minor/major repairs in accordance with approved work orders or assignment objectives.

  Communicate clearly and effectively with supervisor and other personnel.

  Adapt work plans to changing conditions, i.e., weather, crew strength, unexpected problems with equipment, tools, projects, or other unforeseen circumstances.

  Use computers, spreadsheets, databases, and email programs for documenting work completion or communication.
