The Johns Hopkins University Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a casual/on call Laboratory Manager to oversee general administration of lab activities. Including following all safety protocols, applying for and keeping updated various safety approvals. Completes ordering and maintains lab stocks of common items. In charge of equipment purchases and maintenance and repair. In charge of writing, assembling and submitting animal protocol and oversees that all procedures in protocol are followed. In charge of maintenance of computers and software for the lab, the point person for maintaining the lab server. In charge of monitoring budgets and ensuring that funds are appropriately spent. Oversees hiring of new personnel and makes sure that appropriate training occurs. Supervises technical personnel in the lab.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for all aspects of laboratory management including but not limited to personnel supervision, inventory tracking, supply orders, budget tracking, facility maintenance, safety compliance, wet bench work, analysis, and oversight of assigned research projects to completion.
Maintain complete and accurate records of laboratory orders, equipment service agreements, and vendor interactions.
Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results, e.g. reading controls, evaluate results.
Order equipment and supplies, interface with vendors.
Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions. Works independently.
Teach/train students and technologists in the lab. Guide, direct and facilitate problem solving for lab members on day-to-day problems with more challenging research assays.
Make scientific contribution to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity.
Collaborate in development of new techniques and instruments.
Apply published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with Principal Investigator (PI).
Responsible for adhering to all policies and procedures set forth by the JHU SOM and the Department of Genetic Medicine, including Administration policies.
Monitor all budgets for the lab including spending, payroll and reconciliations.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Extensive experience managing mouse colonies.
Ability to handle mice for a variety of experimental procedures.
Physical Requirements
Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
Finger dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm.
Ability to see and hear within normal parameters; lift, carry, move supplies, computers, glassware, etc.
Ability to move about workspace.
Supervisor Responsibility
Supervises 2 laboratory technicians and 2 student learners. Responsible for hiring, training, discipline, performance evaluations, and termination.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
Five years related experience, including proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
