About IT Programmer I

  The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) *at the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicinehas an exciting opportunity for an *IT Programmer I. Under general supervision, the IT Programmer I designs, codes, tests, debugs, documents, and maintains complex computer programs for processing collected patient vital signs in order to predict outcomes. Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, software constraints, operating time, and form of desired results. Participates in system and application security and control procedures. The position also will provide consults for projects hardware/software architecture design and system diagnosis. The IT Programmer I works for the Patient Safety Division of the Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research organized research center (STAR-ORC) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. STAR-ORC is a world-class, multi-disciplinary research and educational center focusing on brain injuries, critical care and organ support, resuscitation, surgical outcomes, patient safety and injury prevention. It is the first research center in the nation dedicated exclusively to the study of trauma, its complications and prevention. The Patient Safety Division within STAR-ORC focuses on developing the advanced algorithms and devices for predicting patient status. PRIMARY DUTIES: * Interprets specifications to develop computer programs (detailed flowcharts; pseduo code, & programming diagrams; illustrating sequence of steps programs must follow; define input, output, & logical operations involved). * Tests programs to ensure that program operates according to specifications and that changes have no adverse impact on performance. * Develops and maintains client system, and operations documentation, instructional materials for client training sessions and instructions to guide operating personnel. * Assists other programming staff with responding to inquiries and requests from clients. * Creates special reports and file extracts from existing databases. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION:High School Diploma or GED. PREFERRED EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field strongly preferred. EXPERIENCE:One (1) year applicable programming experience. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience in C/C , PHP, Matlab, and/or Python strongly preferred. OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credit being equivalent to one year of experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES General knowledge of applicable programming languages and software packages. Working knowledge of security and internal control procedures related to programming. Skill in writing programs in applicable languages; in analyzing and designing program logic. Ability to operate applicable computer input devices and peripherals; to communicate effectively with clients; to resolve programming problems and determine the impact of proposed solutions; to communicate effectively in writing.
