The successful candidate will drive architectural decisions and promote the highest standards of quality within our IT@UMN technology community. This role is multifaceted, focusing on technical strategy, assessment, cultural influence, and advocacy. This position is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship. Salary: $130,000 - $140,000 Key responsibilities include: Network Strategy and Planning (75%) Define architectural runway vision for Network and Telephony Services by identifying current and future needs based on business objectives, industry trends and university policies. Serve as the technical authority for the entire portfolio of network services including: route/switch, WiFi, traffic management, VPN, Firewall, WAN, Internet presence, DNS/DHCP/IP Addressing, datacenter, automation, and network security Instill security by design principles into the architecture, engineering, and operations of all network functions. Negotiate capacity with Product Managers and key stakeholders for architectural investment Design and document high-level and detailed architecture standards for network products, ensuring alignment with business goals and technology strategy. Identify network standards, tools, best practices. Cross-domain Collaboration (25%) Use enterprise architecture practices to collaborate with peers. Participate with a group of technologists, including the CTO, other architects, and technology leaders, both inside and outside of Infrastructure, to design cohesive technical solutions. Evangelize architecture principles, practices, and key considerations to IT@UMN infrastructure and broader technology teams using a mix of in-person, pre-recorded, and written materials to suit different learning preferences. Facilitate community conversations about quality architecture to encourage a culture that empowers stakeholders and the developer community to drive platform engineering for infrastructure. Advocate for IT@UMN Infrastructure and Production architectural needs by participating in activities such as: Request for Information & Request for Proposal Vendor Risk Management SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) Architects Community of Practice Cloud Center of Excellence Security Architecture Review Board EA (Enterprise Architecture) in our DNA Qualifications Qualifications Bachelor's degree plus at least six years of experience or a Master's degree plus at least four years of experience Progressive network engineering experience Previous architecture experience (network or enterprise) Track record of technology planning through needs gathering, product evaluation, and proposal management Experience designing infrastructure solutions across platforms Solid understanding of security best practices that relate to infrastructure, including: Zero-trust model, NIST 800-171, threat detection, and testing Experience interpreting, developing services for, and adhering to compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, PCI, and FERPA Demonstrated knowledge of automation, orchestration, and platform engineering concepts including datacenter and multi-cloud architecture Ability to articulate a technical vision at the executive level, as well as the ability to set the tone for advancement at the engineering and operations levels Demonstrated experience in consensus building and negotiation Benefits Working at the University At the University of Minnesota, you'll find a flexible work environment and supportive colleagues who are interested in lifelong learning.
