Description:
Accession specimens when needed, assist Pathologist with grossing of surgical specimens, embed tissues and cut fixed specimens for permanent tissue slides for microscopic examination by the Pathologist for accurate diagnosis. Perform special stains and IHC stains as well. Assists with Frozen sections for immediate preliminary diagnosis of patients in the OR. Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of instruments in the department. Cross trained to assist in onsite FNA procedures.
Demonstrates adequate knowledge of appropriate functions
Follows Hospital Policies.
Demonstrates ability to adequately use departmental downtime procedure
Recognizes specific problems and takes appropriate action in accordance with departmental policy
Maintains system security appropriately addressing transactions on the error log
Consistently demonstrates team work
Properly identifies out patients by verbal confirmation
Properly identifies the inpatients using the hospital identification wristband
Properly identifies patients for Blood Bank procedures using the Blood Bank identification wristband
Properly identifies patients and adequately performs venipunctures and/or skin punctures.
Uses appropriate aseptic technique to draw blood cultures
Clearly and accurately labels all specimens immediately after venipuncture and completes necessary documentation
Evaluates specimen adequacy
Receives specimens in the computer and delivers them to the appropriate department
Monitors inventory levels and follows appropriate protocol for re-ordering supplies
Deletes or cancels orders as necessary with full documentation of reason
Collates requests, answers the telephone, delivers specimens to appropriate department and operates the pneumatic tube
Always demonstrates proper telephone etiquette
Consistently assumes responsibility for calls, correctly answers questions, directs inquiries and takes messages
Adapts work schedule to meet emergency staffing needs
Is responsive, courteous, respectful and cooperative in completing tasks
Performs other related duties as required
