  Job Description

  NREL has an opening for a Fire Protection Engineering Intern. This position will support the Fire Protection Program within the Environment, Safety, Health, & Quality Office. This position will report to the Fire Protection AHJ and will address site wide fire protection engineering activities. Key responsibilities include:

  Assist Fire Protection Team in reviewing and updating Fire Protection Assessment reports, under supervision of Fire Protection Engineers.

  Assist Fire Protection Engineers during building fire inspections.

  Develop pre-incident plans, under direction of fire protection engineer, for NREL facilities.

  Field validation the current status of open fire protection Findings.

  Perform code research related to existing fire protection Findings.

  Perform sound level measurements of fire alarm system. Develop maps showing audibility levels throughout the building.

  Contribute to the development and implementation of NRELs fire protection program in accordance with DOE orders and standards, applicable codes, and NFPA standards.

  Apply sound fire protection engineering principles to assist in researchers in accomplishing research efforts.

  Assist in establishing, modifying, and overseeing fire protection program policies and procedures to support implementation of DOE O 420.1C and other applicable codes and standards.

  Assist in development of policies and procedures for inspection, testing, and maintenance of required fire and life safety systems (fire protection systems, fire barriers, emergency lighting, etc.)

  In collaboration with a fire protection engineer, conduct reviews of fire protection drawings and calculations (including but not limited to fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, storage tanks, special extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems).

  Participate in project management for new construction activities as it pertains to fire and life safety. This includes plan review, team meetings, inspections, and commissioning.

  Interface diplomatically with a wide range of staff including scientific researchers, management, administrative, safety personnel, and external stakeholders.

  Basic Qualifications

  Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

  Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

  Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

  Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

  Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

  Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

  Enrollment in a Fire Protection Engineering program, or a related engineering discipline, with a desire to learn about fire protection.

  Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

  Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 - $68,300

  NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

  Benefits Summary

  Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
