Brief Position Overview

The Geospatial Core Facility ( GCF ) at Montana State University plans to fill a 0.6 FTE technical position with experience in geospatial technologies. The successful candidate will work with the GCF team, along with internal and external core users in collecting and processing geospatial data, along with project development and management.

Position Details

General Statement

The Geospatial Field Technician will lead the day-to-day operations of the GCF including maintaining lab space, computing resources, and field work mobilization/demobilization. Job responsibilities include primary data collection and analysis, and project management and reporting.

Duties and Responsibilities

Monitor and maintain GCF instruments, equipment, and computing resources.

Operate equipment for internal and external users; prepare and send analysis reports to external users.

Contribute to field logistics, mobilization, and deployment.

Assist, when necessary, with management needs such as purchasing, ordering supplies, updating and maintaining equipment, managing user accounts and user scheduling, and general laboratory operation and maintenance.

Assist in communications with GCF users (i.e., students, faculty, external clients) and train and oversee new GCF users.

Train and oversee new GCF users

Project planning and management to include supervision of student workers within GCF and budget oversight.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Earth/Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated experience in geospatial technologies including data creation (field and computationally derived), data visualization, data stewardship, and project management.

Capacity to complete work under project timelines.

Comfortable working in the field under a range of climatic conditions.

Demonstrated skills with Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to develop flight plans for a range of sensors, collect data, and post-process data.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge Skills

Master’s degree in Geography, Earth/Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline; OR at least one year of demonstrated experience in geospatial technologies and analysis.

Proficiency and experience conducting geospatial related research, including developing research questions, writing grants, and managing research projects and timelines.

Demonstrated experience in geospatial programming.

Diagnostic and repair skills regarding electronic and field equipment.

Interpersonal skills for dealing with students and other users in multidisciplinary fields.

Demonstrated written and oral communication skills such as writing technical reports and dealing with internal and external users and with private sector individuals.

Experience in handling computers and hardware and software issues.

Be highly motivated to learn new skills within a given discipline or to learn new skills outside their current skills.

Possess abilities for timely and effective communications, oral or written, with users and to resolve any outstanding issues in a timely manner.
