Firefighter - Benton
SUMMARY:
Participates in fire suppression, emergency medical, and rescueactivities and provides support
maintenance by performing the following duties. (FLSA Non-Exempt)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
Other related duties may be assigned. Regular attendance is an essentialfunction of this
position.
Responds to emergency medical and rescue alarms: provides emergencymedical
treatment; participates in search and rescue and extrication operations;operates
equipment; reloads equipment on apparatus.
Responds to fire alarms: couples, rolls, folds, reels, and unreels hose;lays and connects
hose lines and connects nozzles, valves, and fittings; operateshydrants; directs water/fog
streams; carries, places, climbs, raises, and lowers ladders; makesforcible entries;
ventilates; participates in search and rescue and evacuation operations;provides
emergency medical treatment; participates in salvage and overhaul tasks;participates in
investigation to determine cause and origin of fire; reloads hose and/orequipment on
apparatus.
Inspects and maintains: inspects, cleans, and maintains in properworking condition all
assigned equipment; inspects, cleans, and assists in maintainingapparatus; loads hose
and/or equipment on apparatus; tests hose and couplings; cleans firestation and
grounds; displays and handles flags; makes minor repairs to tools,equipment, and/or
station.
Keeps records and prepares reports: enters training and hose records incomputer
program; reports to the Captain any repairs, needed and made, tofacilities, apparatus,
and equipment; reports any recognized violations of fire codes andordinances by
citizens of the City.
Makes company fire surveys: identifies common, special, structural, andpanic hazards;
inspects building construction for fire control characteristics;inspects refrigeration,
ventilation, and heating systems; inspects storage, handling, andtransportation of
flammable liquids and gases and other hazardous materials; inspects andtests hydrants
and/or other water sources.
Performs miscellaneous administrative duties: relieves for Engineer;participates in fire
Prevention programs; testifies in court; assists with entry level andpromotional tests.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The complexity, guidelines, supervisorycontrols, and
supervision responsibilities described below are representative of thisposition.
Tasks involve related steps. The employee carries out detailed, butuninvolved written or
oral instructions.
Specific guidelines are available. The employee uses initiative inselecting appropriate
guidelines and carrying out recurring assignments.
The supervisor makes specific assignments and authorization is neededfor any deviation
from original instructions. The supervisor closely controls and reviewsmost work.
The employee does not supervise any employees.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operatingand maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports.Ability to communicate
effectively with citizens, Fire Department personnel, and otheremployees of the City.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calcul ate percent, area, circumference, and volume. Abilityto apply concepts of basic
algebra and geometry.
COMPUTER SKILL:
Basic skill in the use of PTS Fire program.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of the operation of all related equipment. Thoroughknowledge of hydrant,
sprinkler, standpipe, major structure, and street locations and pre-fireplans. General knowledge
of proper radio procedures. Ability to work under very stressfulconditions for extended periods
of time if necessary.
