About Field Surveyor (Civil Engineer II)

  The Field Surveyor is a member of the MassDOT Geodetic Survey Field Crew. The Geodetic Survey Crew establishes horizontal and vertical control statewide at all MassDOT projects along with other survey assignments. Duties will include, but are not limited to: * Assist in the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers to establish geodetic control. * Assist in the use of total station equipment to perform field surveys. * Assist in the use of spirit levels and digital levels to perform survey work to establish high order vertical control. * Perform traverse and leveling calculations. * Assist in needed field operations related to aerial photography and photogrammetry projects. * Assist in providing training for MassDOT personnel in proper utilization of instruments and equipment including mapping grade GPS receivers. * Assist with the recovery and maintenance of the MassDOT control network which includes approximately 19,000 horizontal and vertical control points statewide. * Performs research at other state departments/agencies, municipalities, and the registry of deeds when needed. This position is eligible for a five thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired to the Unit E collective bargaining unit at MassDOT. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts: 1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee’s first paycheck. 2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period. Only candidates external to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation are eligible for the sign-on bonus. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's degree with a major in civil engineering* or civil engineering technology* may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in civil engineering* or civil engineering technology, may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. III. A Graduate degree with a major in civil engineering, may be substituted for the required experience.* NOTE: The terms civil engineering and civil engineering technology include related engineering disciplines such as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, soils, sanitary, environmental, drafting, highway, architectural, mining, airport and materials. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
