  Environmental Analyst III – Woburn The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources. In carrying out this mission MassDEP commits to address and advance environmental justice and equity for all people of the Commonwealth, to provide meaningful, inclusive opportunities for people to participate in agency decisions that affect their lives; and to ensure a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. * Duty Statement: Under the general supervision of an Environmental Engineer/Analyst of higher grade in the Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup/Northeast Region, the Environmental Analyst III shall work in a Technical Support unit and perform the following duties: · Review location history and available site assessment submittals for areas where a release of oil or hazardous materials, including VOCs and Poly and Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), has occurred or may have occurred, and determine if additional field investigations are required. · Where necessary and appropriate, prepare a field investigation proposal, to include the location and depths of soil samples, location and depths of groundwater monitoring wells, sampling procedures, and needed testing methods and parameters. · Oversee private sector or publicly funded contractor services to implement field investigation efforts, and/or perform needed work using in-house supplies and equipment. When conducting in-house field investigations, obtain property access and contact Dig Safe as required prior to the initiation of field work. · As appropriate and directed, install small-diameter direct-push wells using a hammer drill and other appropriate tools, and obtain groundwater samples using inertial pumping or other techniques. · As appropriate and directed, install sub-slab soil vapor probes in buildings where a vapor intrusion pathway is suspected to be present, and/or conduct discrete or high-volume sampling of installed probes. · As appropriate and directed, conduct diagnostic testing of structures to facilitate the design of a sub-slab depressurization system · Collect and analyze groundwater, surface water, soil vapor, indoor air, and ambient air samples for volatile organic compounds using available instruments. · Operate and calibrate gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers, gas chromatographs with PID/ELCD and FID detectors, electrochemical sensor meters, microscopes, fluorescent meters, and radiological detectors. · Assess the adequacy of sub-slab depressurization systems and determine needed modifications. · Prepare detailed technical reports on the conduct and results of field investigations. · Respond as needed to significant releases of oil or hazardous materials as part of the MassDEP Field Assessment and Support Team (FAST) *Preferred Qualifications and Work Experience: * * Proficiency in physical, organic, and analytical chemistry * Proficiency in geology, hydrogeology, and contaminant fate and transport. o Ability and willingness to work outdoors and with generators, hammer drills, reciprocating saws, and other tools as needed. o Good oral and written communication skills o Knowledge of MGL c. 21E and the Massachusetts Contingency Plan * Current OSHA HAZWOPER certifications for General Site Worker (40-hours) o Valid Massachusetts driver’s license * First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least two years must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology,. natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.* III. A Graduate degree with a major in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required (A) experience and one year of the required (B) experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
