The Bacteriologist 2 is responsible for performing tasks and workflow management in the PHL Infectious Disease Laboratory (IDL) specimen receiving. Responsibilities include:
Specimen unpacking, integrity checks, test order entry and test transmission within the LIS
Initial specimen processing for bacteria culture and viral molecular testing for downstream laboratory analysis
Work with IDL laboratory and external submitters to complete specimen submission errors, amended test reports and/or test result refaxing
Create, edit, and finalize documents such as SOPs, Job Aids, or training checklists
Assist with high throughput, batch specimen accessioning
Prepare and ship specimens, and receive test reports from external laboratories
Assist with training new employees in specimen receiving tasks
Manages IDL general laboratory supply orders
Weekend and holiday specimen receiving work is necessary on a rotational schedule.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in a biological, chemical or physical science.
AND
One year of professional diagnostic testing experience in a public health, hospital-based or clinical-based laboratory setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge and experience in basic principles of pre-analytical specimen receiving, microbiology, general laboratory practice, and laboratory safety.
Ability to effectively plan, assign, direct the work.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Self-motivated, can prioritize and meet deadlines given by their supervisor.
Experience with Excel - data organization & analysis, pivot tables, sorting, formulas.
Ability to react and adapt to change in program structure when needed.
Physical Requirements
Occasional transportation of up to 25 pounds.

This position requires successful completion of a background check.
CLIA Education Requirements are a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter college credits that includes either: 1) 24 semester/36 quarter credits in medical laboratory technology; or 2) 24 semester/36 quarter credits of science courses that includes six semester/nine quarter credits in chemistry; six semester/nine quarter credits in biology; and twelve semester/eighteen quarter hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination. Applicants will be asked to provide evidence of course completion at time of interview.
