  DESCRIPTION

  SUMMARY:Engineering Interns will work in a collaborative environment with the City of South Bend Engineering team on tasks including planning, design, asset management, data analysis, fieldwork, and engineering inspection for the various Public Works projects.

  The Department of Public Works builds the foundation for a thriving city by providing essential services that enhance the communitys quality of life. Engineering, being a division of Public Works, oversees the development, design, construction management, and inspection for a wide range of public works and capital improvement projects throughout the City.

  In addition to working with the Division of Engineering, interns will work in collaboration with the Center for Civic Innovation (CCI) Internship Program. The partnered program will provide the opportunity to work in small teams to approach complex community issues through technical, analytical, and empathetic problem-solving skills.

  SUPERVISION EXERCISED:Not applicable.

  ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Engineering Interns will work on one to two main projects over the summer with a team of 4-5 other interns, mentored by City and CCI staff. In addition to the main project, other daily tasks may be assigned, including but not limited to:

  Perform GIS data collection to further the Department of Public Works asset management program.Perform field inspections of existing street lights, traffic signals, street signs, pavement condition, sewer and water utilities, curb and sidewalk condition, stormwater infrastructure, etc.Compile research related to engineering planning, design projects, industry standards, and guidance documents.Assist with the development of plans and specifications related to capital improvement projects.Perform construction observation and inspection.Research state and local regulations.Gain experience toward a career as a professional engineer.NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Perform other duties and assumes other responsibilities as apparent or as delegated.

  QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty in a satisfactory manner.   EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing working toward a degree in Engineering, preferably Civil, Environmental, or similar program.

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:

  Ability to pay close attention to detail and check the quality of own work.Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.Ability to use sound judgment.Ability to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details in a fast-paced environment.Strong interpersonal skills to communicate on and off a project meeting or construction site.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Valid Drivers License and acceptable driving record.

  WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed in a standard office setting, in the field, and virtual pending the environment of the summer office setting.

  Some exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Work environment is both formal and informal, team oriented, having variable tasks, pace, and pressure.
