If so,the Utah Geological Survey (UGS),a division of the Utah Department of Natural Resources (DNR),has an immediate opening for an Earthquake Hazards Geologist at the Project Geologist level. The Earthquake Hazards Geologist will lead earthquake-related projects within the UGS Geologic Hazards Program (),including Quaternary fault mapping,paleoseismic investigations,responding to emergencies,and technical inquiries. Depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate,the position may also be underfilled at the Geologist level.PRINCIPAL DUTIES:As an Earthquake Hazards Geologist,you will:
Perform Quaternary fault mapping (1:24,000-scale or better) across Utah for inclusion in the Utah Quaternary Fault Database and the USGS Quaternary Fault and Fold Database.Perform paleo seismic investigations including field mapping and reconnaissance,geomorphic analysis,and fault trenching.Respond to technical inquiries related to faults and earthquake hazards in Utah.Collaborate with Utah's local governments,state and federal agencies,and others in reducing the risk from earthquake hazards.Update earthquake and surface-fault hazard investigation guidelines,as needed.Serve on and help coordinate earthquake working groups composed of representatives from the private sector,and state and federal agencies.Support other UGS Geologic Hazards Program projects and activities,as needed; mentor other hazard geologists.THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:The ideal candidate will have:
An advanced degree in geology or geological engineering with published graduate and professional research in earthquake and related hazards.A college degree in geology,geological engineering,or a directly related degree,is required to obtain a PG.Professional Geologist (PG) license in a U.S. state and eligible for reciprocity in Utah () or be eligible for Utah Professional Geologist (PG) licensing () within 12 months of hire.Experience with earthquake- and fault-related geologic hazards,including hazard mapping,investigation,and mitigation.Experience with geologic hazards.WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN OUR TEAM:The UGS Geologic Hazards Program is focused on reducing Utah's life safety,property,and economic risk from geologic hazards by responding to geologic hazard emergencies,investigating and mapping geologic hazards,and providing technical and educational outreach and information on these hazards.
