About Director, Sourcing Engineering

  The Microsoft Capacity, Supply Chain, and Provisioning (CSCP) group is an exciting and fast evolving engineering group within Microsoft. CSCP’s mission is to optimize and deliver industry leading cloud infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s online services used by our Customers around the world. The organization is responsible for strategy and delivery of the foundational platform for all Microsoft Online Services including demand and capacity forecasting along with supply chain management which includes planning, sourcing, logistics and fulfillment. CSCP supports over 200 online businesses including Bing, Office 365, OneDrive, Xbox and Windows Azure branded services.

  Cloud Sourcing and Supply Chain (CSSC) organization within CSCP manages sourcing and supply of Information Technology (IT) hardware for the data centers. Well-defined and executed sourcing and supply chain management ensures reliable on-time performance, optimized cost, prevents urgent and unplanned investments, and provides accurate and timely information across the supply base and internally across the infrastructure organization.   We are seeking an individual to join Cloud Sourcing and Supply Chain (CSSC) Storage Commodity sourcing team to manage Hard Drive Disk (HDD) sourcing. In the role, this person will be instrumental in delivering operational excellence for cost, supplier relationships, and sustainability related to the acquisition of technology and services related to compute & storage systems. Successful candidates will build long lasting, strategic partnerships with the optimal supply base, internal stakeholders and position Microsoft for sustained success.

  Responsibilities

  As a Director, Sourcing Engineering, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Sourcing manager for HDD/Tape Storage:

  o Engage with cross functional leadership including product design, planning, Business Units to determine sourcing requirements for Memory technology.

  o Develop research frameworks and strategies that span markets, competitors and industries, perform analyses of supplier pricing, capabilities and capacity to provide materials.

  o Develop multi-year Tape/HDD sourcing strategy.

  o Make investment recommendations in new technologies, components and or materials that would position Microsoft at an advantage for the future.

  o Manage complex contract negotiation activities cross functionally and ensures contract meet both price and capacity needs while also reflecting Microsoft’s cross functional engagements with suppliers

  • Supplier management:

  o Define Request for Quote (RFQ) / Request for Proposal (RFP) activities and strategies for multiple product categories and influences structural sourcing teams' negotiation strategies with suppliers; identifies cost reduction opportunities and works closely with suppliers to drive cost competitiveness.

  o Define and execute on processes to suppliers are compliant with Microsoft business requirements (e.g., security, social responsibility, payment terms), they deliver corrective actions on time from business review / audits and facilitates efforts to drive suppliers toward their operational and cost metrics.

  • Technology engagement:

  o Facilitates early technical engagements with cross functional leadership including product design, quality, and business teams to determine sourcing requirements.

  Qualifications

  Required Qualifications

  Bachelor's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 8+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles

  OR Master's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 6+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles

  OR equivalent experience.

  5+ years of experience working in storage industry or in procurement of storage solutions

  Other Requirements

  Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Demonstrated leadership skills and growth mindset to drive cross functional engagement.

  Ability to partner with internal and external engineering teams to build credibility and trust while driving alignment around common strategy.

  Demonstrate track record in supplier negotiation and management.

  Expertise in market analysis to measure market size, players, customers, growth, technology replacements/forecasts, pricing trends, etc., to formulate sourcing strategies.

  Expertise in financial statement analysis to derive should-cost models and cost competitiveness/financial strengths of suppliers.

  Demonstrated ability to think strategically but detailed oriented to support hypothesis with facts.

  Sourcing Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
