Visit www.cdc.gov Responsibilities The Director, OLSS will: Serve as the laboratory science, safety, and quality advisor to the Principal Deputy Director and the CDC Director, shaping and directing laboratory science, safety, and quality policies and plans for the agency and provide leadership and direction in developing, improving, and fully utilizing CDC's capacity in laboratory science and research. Provide leadership and direction in establishing large scale collaborative laboratory science research that is problem generated, cross-institutional, and multidisciplinary when necessary to address broad, cross-cutting public health problems. Provide laboratory science/safety/quality guidance and leadership to state, or local government agencies, universities, health-related organizations, private and public foundations and professional associations, public health practitioners, and emergency response organizations. Provide scientific and laboratory safety advice and consultation as a nationally or internationally recognized consultant an expert on laboratory science innovation, research, ethics, and science administration. Direct special projects involving laboratory science, safety, and quality matters of interest to the CDC, and HHS. Bring about strategic change, within and outside the organization, to meet organizational goals and establish an organizational vision. Lead staff towards meeting the organization's vision/mission/goals. Exercise leadership to ensure all programs under their direction reflect the principles of workforce diversity in their management and operation in such areas as recruitment and staffing, employee development, staff assignments and communications. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level to be considered for this position. Basic Qualifications for RF-0602: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience. Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as serving as a senior advisor in the management, coordination, and oversight of an organization's laboratory science, safety, and quality initiative including, developing policies and performance goals, and evaluation of the organization. Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education This position has a positive education requirement. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit transcripts or a list of applicable courses with their application package. This also applies to status applicants who are applying to a position in a different occupational series than they are currently or were previously appointed. Applicants who do not submit their transcripts (or list of applicable course work) will be evaluated based on the information provided in their application package (and/or resume) along with their responses to a self-certification question asking if they meet the basic qualifications listed in the vacancy announcement. Those deemed tentatively qualified will be referred for consideration. If selected, applicants will be required to provide an official transcript prior to the final job offer. If the official transcript does not support the educational requirements of the position, the applicant will be considered ineligible for the position. Additional Information The executive level compensation package is commensurate with qualifications and experience and may result in a higher salary than reflected above. This position is located in the Office of Laboratory Science and Safety, within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta, GA.
