Montana State University invites applications for the position of Director of the WWAMI Medical Education Program. This position is a full-time, joint appointment with the University of Washington School of Medicine ( UWSOM ). WWAMI is the five-state medical education program at UWSOM which includes six campuses across Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. The Director will lead a student-centered educational program that provides opportunities for students to pursue medical education within Montana and influence positive change in complex health care systems, particularly in rural settings. The Director will also serve as the leader of MSU Health Sciences initiatives.

General Statement
Montana State University invites applications for the position of Director of the WWAMI Medical Education Program. This position is a full-time, joint appointment with the University of Washington School of Medicine ( UWSOM ). The Director will lead a student-centered educational program that provides opportunities for students to pursue medical education within Montana and influence positive change in complex health care systems, particularly in rural settings, in collaboration with the two Montana clinical assistant deans employed by UWSOM .
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, the director is the senior academic and administrative officer for the WWAMI Medical Education Program at Montana State University and, as such, is responsible for working with senior administration, faculty, students and staff in setting strategic, operational, and financial directions. The director represents the Program on the Academic Council (deans and directors) at MSU and represents the Montana program as an ex officio member of the UWSOM Curriculum, Foundations, and Student Progress Committees. In addition, the Director may by appointed or elected as voting member to these and other committees at UWSOM , as appropriate to the administration of the five-state WWAMI medical education program. The WWAMI Medical Education Program director also supports the development of the RIDE dental education program in Montana including collaborating with representatives from the University of Washington School of Dentistry.
In the role of Health Sciences, the Director will:
Foster education, training and research that improves health and healthcare services for the state of Montana.
Promote education of students to become highly qualified healthcare providers, educators and researchers.
Promote interdisciplinary collaborations in the health sciences.
Increase the visibility of biomedical research programs at MSU .
Maintain and regularly update the MSU web page for Health Sciences initiatives.
Montana State University seeks a creative, energetic, transparent, and respected leader to guide the WWAMI Medical Education Program and Health Sciences initiatives. The following percentages of effort are approximate and could be adjusted at the discretion of the Provost in consultation with the selected finalist.
ADMINISTRATION 60%
Reporting to the MSU executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, and collaborating with the Vice Dean for Academic, Regional and Rural Affairs of the UWSOM , the Director is responsible for oversight and management of all academic/curricular, pipeline, personnel, facility, operations, and fiscal matters of the Montana WWAMI program at MSU .
Coordination and implementation of forthcoming UWSOM curricular revisions.
Travel required to UWSOM and Montana instructional sites.
The Director also oversees the Montana Body Donation Program and chairs the steering committee overseeing the Post-baccalaureate Premed Certificate Program at MSU .
TEACHING 15%
Provide quality medical education instruction within area of expertise for Montana WWAMI at MSU .
CLINICAL PRACTICE / RESEARCH 20%
Engage in clinical practice and/or sustain an active scholarly research program.
SERVICE and PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 5%
Provide service to the university, the state, the Montana WWAMI program, UWSOM , and the profession; engage in professional development activities that advance administrative, leadership, curricular-development and/or pedagogy practices.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Doctoral degree (MD/DO/PhD) in related field with experience commensurate for appointment at the rank of associate/full professor at MSU and the UWSOM .
Knowledge, experience, and expertise to lead the medical education team at MSU to achieve the objectives of the UWSOM medical education curriculum.
Evidence of strong communication skills that can be leveraged to:
Lead the Montana WWAMI medical education program at the MSU campus.
Support and advance collaborative partnerships across the five.
Increase the visibility of biomedical research and health sciences educational programs at MSU .
Demonstrated administrative experience to include fiscal/budget management, personnel management, and program planning.
Experience teaching medical students and expertise to teach in one of the first or second year WWAMI curriculum subject matter areas.
Clinical medicine/public health practice experience or active research program in the health/biomedical sciences.
Evidence of ability to work effectively as a team member and team leader.
