About Director of Interpretation

  Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, one of the oldest attractions in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks a thoughtful, engaging leader to serve as its new Director of Interpretation. The Director will provide a professional vision and cohesive interpretation of the site. The Director will help create interpretive programs, collaborate with community partners, and clearly communicate Magnolia’s history, vision, and mission to visitors, staff, and the general public. The most successful candidate for this role has experience with historic site management and interpretation, fluency in African American and Southern history, and experience in discussing American slavery and its legacy with various audiences and constituencies.

  The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

  Provides dynamic leadership, vision, and direction for the interpretive team while serving as Magnolia’s primary spokesperson about history and interpretive programs

  Represents Magnolia’s history and programs to the public and at both industry and academic conferences with engaging, original topics

  Develops and implements strategic plan, action plan, programming oversight, outreach direction, and audience engagement strategies to ensure historical accuracy and public value

  Creates strategies for interpretive content and executes the presentation, education of staff and delivery of information throughout all tours

  Performs research both independently and with a team to update current tours and develop tours, programs, and special events that are creative, engaging and dynamic

  Collaborates with other interpretive staff (e.g., Horticulture, Ecology) to ensure a unified message for each tour as well as unique content per tour

  Oversees marketing campaigns to ensure alignment of messaging

  Represents a team-player spirit when assigned other duties as required

  Requirements

  The successful candidate will have the following skills:

  Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate well with people of all ages, demographics, backgrounds, and ability levels

  High emotional intelligence

  Experience discussing race, racism, and the legacy of slavery

  Knowledge of tourism industry standards and best practices

  Excellent organizational and planning skills with demonstrated creativity in developing, writing, and delivering lively, engaging, and varied exhibits, presentations, and interpretive programs for diverse audiences

  Proficiency in making engaging educational presentations to diverse groups

  Experience with Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices

  Ability to function under flexible and changing conditions

  Exceptional candidates will have the following qualifications:

  Proven record of working positively with community partners

  Problem-solver who can handle complex issues

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Master’s degree in history, historic preservation, American studies, museum studies, archaeology, education, or a related field; and

  Five years of progressively responsible experience, including two years as a program coordinator or

  An equivalent combination of education and experience

  We are proud to offer a competitive salary starting at $65,000 annually, in line with industry standards.
