About Data Sciences & Machine Intelligence Graduate Summer Internship (PhD Intern)

  Overview

  The Data Science and Machine Intelligence Group is seeking a graduate student internship in broad areas of data sciences, high performance computing, machine learning, network science, and graph neural networks. The internship will entail working closely with mentors on design, development and application of machine learning methods to solve problems in science. In particular, focus will be on the use of large language models for processing multi-modal datasets. Preferred skills will include familiarity and prior experience in data science, high performance computing, high level languages such as C++, Python, and AI/ML libraries such as PyTorch and Tensorflow. Domain knowledge and experience in broad areas of science will be preferred.

  Responsibilities

  Scalable implementations and high performance computing

  Application and finetuning of large language models

  Natural language processing and prompt engineering

  General data science, data collection and verification

  Applied mathematical principles to identify trends in data sets

  Qualifications

  Minimum Qualifications:

  Candidates must be currently enrolled/matriculated in a PhD program at an accredited college.

  Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  Relevant coursework covering a subset of the following areas: fundamentals of computer science and/or data analysis

  Considerable experience in high level programming with familiarity to C/C++, Python, scripting languages and domain specific languages

  Demonstratable experience in conducting scientific exploration and research through artifacts such as scientific publicaitons and software tools

  Background and experience in networked epidemiology, combinatorial optimization and mathematical programming

  In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

  Mandatory Requirements

  Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a “country of risk” without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
