Duke Energy is seeking an energetic, hardworking student with an interest in the electric power industry currently pursuing a degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, GIS, or a related field. This position is in the Customer Delivery Vegetation Management Effectiveness organization.
The CD VM Effectiveness organization is responsible for driving strategies that reduce vegetation costs, drive efficiencies in processes, operations, and interactions with other lines of business.
The successful candidate will primarily assist the Vegetation Management team by reviewing maps of upcoming work plans to identify and document potential environmentally sensitive interactions. The intern will work closely with the VM System Forester, VM Program Managers, and the Environmental and Natural Resource team. Other job functions may include but not limited to field assessments, protected bat roost surveys, and remote sensing field validations.
Responsibilities
With some supervision and increased latitude for unreviewed work, duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Utilize the Environmental Checklist to perform detailed desktop reviews of VM work plan maps to identify and document potential environmentally sensitive interactions.
Develop positive working relationships.
Support the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning.
Willingness to make sufficient choices and decisions, with some guidance or direction from a mentor or supervisor.
Strive to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge as well as skills and performance.
Reviews mapping data for quality and accuracy
Required Qualifications
Enrolled in an accredited college or university pursing an associate degree or higher degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, GIS, Environmental Management, or a closely related technical discipline
Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher
Must not graduate prior to August 2024
Desired Qualifications
Good written and oral communication skills.
Openly receives coaching and mentoring.
Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Familiarity with reporting information from Microsoft Power Business Intelligence (Power BI)
Ability to gain basic knowledge and experience in Electric Transmission and Distribution mapping.
Willingness to learn new software tools that support Electric Transmission and Distribution connectivity models.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with the ability and willingness to share information and transfer knowledge to others.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Demonstrated strong customer-service attitude.
Understanding of basic principles of project management.
Experience with troubleshooting technical and process-based issues.
Working Conditions
Must be able to work full-time (40 hours/week) throughout the duration of the summer.
Office and field environment
Occasional travel to other work locations as needed
Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations.
