  Job Summary

  Reporting to the Academy Program Manager and working within the Office of Engagement leadership team, the Coordinator is responsible for assisting in developing and implementing a college prep program, the First Star University of Utah Academy, that hosts 30 rising 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th grade foster youth for a four-week, summer residential experience on a college campus and once per month Saturday Academies.

  The position may residential for the full four-week Academy session, over the course of the four-year program that aims to prepare youth for successful matriculation into 2 or 4- year colleges and universities. Responsibilities of the Coordinator during the summer academy include working with the Academy Program Manager and other staff to create a detailed program timeline, cover day-to-day operations, and program assessment related to the summer academy. Responsibilities include supervising staff, assisting the Academy Program Manager in ensuring a safe, nurturing environment exists at all times for the foster youth, mentoring, and mediating these youth when disciplinary issues arise.

  The Coordinator assists the Academy Program Manager in training student-staff and volunteers, as well as, supervising them over the full four-week summer program. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus one year directly related experience or equivalency required (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education). Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

  Core Functions and Duties.

  [Programmatic Responsibilities – 50% time]

  Serve as a mentor and role model for youth with the aim of inspiring and motivating them to pursue higher education.Assist the Academy Director in creating a safe, nurturing, inclusive climate that promotes the intellectual, social, physical, and emotional development of the youth.Assist the Academy Director and the team in managing, monitoring and mediating disciplinary issues that may arise.Coordinate (site selection, transportation, tickets, meals, etc.) field trips to expose students to social, cultural and recreational opportunities in the greater Salt Lake City area.Coordinate and ensure necessary staffing configuration and coverage levels by Directors and mentors for the summer academy.Assist in implementing the detailed schedule for summer academy that includes class time, study time, workshops, fieldtrips, physical activity, leadership development, service learning.Coordinate with the First Star team, advisory board, and community partners to support and advocate for participating youth.[Reports and Data Collection – 15%]

  Update reports during and after the Saturday and Summer Academies on all foster youth participating in the summer academy.All records shall be maintained in the First Star University of Utah Academy offices. \ Assist in developing program assessment plans, methodologies, instruments, and systems that reflect the outcomes of the summer program.[Administrative Responsibilities – 15%]

  Assist the Academy Director in preparing detailed reports on each student.[Training and Supervision – 20%]

  Help to develop and implement staff scheduling calendar to ensure appropriate levels of student to staff ratios and the safety of program participants.Assist in supervising various staff, student workers and volunteers including mentor assignments, training, workflow and performance of student workers and volunteers, as directed by the Academy Director Utilize student success and persistence, student identity development, and learning theories to shape student interactions.Employ listening and advising practices to assist students from diverse backgrounds in accessing resources and opportunities, and developing personal plans.Assist students in accessing non-academic resources necessary to thrive such as counseling, legal aid, housing, tax support and so on.Document interactions and develop practices and procedures for following up where needed. Assist in developing resources (printed literature, websites, videos, social media sites, etc.) to connect students to other opportunities and resources at the University of Utah and in the community.Serve on relevant committees and make recommendations that affect the First Star Academy. Engage in data compilation, analysis and reporting of program outcomes.Participate in information sessions, orientations and tabling events as needed.Work with a diverse range of students, including populations typically underrepresented in higher education (e.g. students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQ students, students with disabilities, and students from lower SES backgrounds).DISCLAIMER
