CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE
Michael Baker International's Construction Services staff supports clients by acting as their trusted on-site agent through all phases of construction, from pre-design to close-out, by providing qualified construction managers, inspectors, constructability reviewers, schedulers, estimators, and safety experts. As new technologies evolve throughout the construction industry, innovative ideas are required to maintain and deliver successful construction projects.
DESCRIPTION
The Construction Inspector will serve as a key member of the firm's growing construction management discipline by working as an employee of the Dearborn, MI office on inspection projects throughout the Metro Detroit area. The successful candidate will perform the inspection services on road and bridge projects for MDOT and other Local Agency Program (LAP) clients, as well as for improvements to airport airside and landside projects. Between field assignments, this position may involve design tasks such as constructability reviews of plans for upcoming projects as well as assisting technical staff during plan preparation.Measures distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of structural installations and layouts.Examines existing structures for structural integrity and reports variances from accepted standards.Verifies levels of alignment, and evaluation of installations and structures.Observes work in progress to ensure that procedures followed, and materials used to conform to specifications.Examines workmanship of finished projects for conformity to standard and approves installation.Interprets blueprints and specifications and discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.Maintains daily log of construction and inspection activities and compares progress reports.Computes monthly estimates of work completed and submits estimates for payment.Prepares sketches of construction installations that deviate from blueprints and reports such as changes for incorporation on master blueprints.Other duties as assigned.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTSHigh School Diploma or GED; Associate's Degree in Construction Technology or related field of study is preferred0-5 years of MDOT construction or related LAP experiencePossess a valid driver's license.Ability to pass a background check.Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPointMDOT Computerized Office Technician certification and experienceMichigan Concrete Association Level 1 Concrete Field Testing TechnicianMichigan Certified Aggregate Inspection Technician Certification - Level 1 is preferred.Michigan Certified Density Control Technician Certification is preferred.Nuclear Gauge Operator Safety Training Certification is preferred.EGLE Storm Water Management - Construction Site CertificationEGLE Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) - Plan Review and Design CertificationICET Michigan Certified Bituminous QA/QC Technician Certification is preferred.Good interpersonal, communication, and conceptual thinking skillsPossess strong math skills, including algebra and geometry for determining areas and volumes.
