  Brief Position Overview

  Civil Engineering faculty members contribute to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, advise and mentor undergraduate students, participate in college activities and committee assignments, and provide service to the University, State, and profession.

  The Civil Engineering Department is seeking professionals to serve as Instructors in the following areas:

  Position Details

  General Statement

  Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

  Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

  The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

  Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  Duties and Responsibilities Include:

  Teach on-campus and/or online courses.

  Advise, evaluate and assist students.

  Participate in curriculum and/or course development.

  Contribute positively and professionally to the academic success of students and the mission of Montana State University.

  Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Relevant degree and experience in Civil Engineering (including sub-disciplines of: cold regions, construction, graphics, environmental, mechanics, geotechnical, hydraulics, hydrology, capstone design, structural, surveying, and transportation engineering).

  Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department

  Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Significant, long-term direct professional experience and substantial insight into the theory and practice of the field or discipline of teaching responsibility.

  Currency in area of teaching responsibility.

  Previous teaching experience.

  Position Special Requirements/Additional Information

  The position for which you have applied MAY BE a Union position. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit.

  Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ). Faculty covered by AFMSU must begin paying either membership dues or representation fees within thirty (30) days of hire. This is a condition of employment. Additional information can be found at AFMSU or by emailing AFSMU .

  Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.

  If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.

  Exceptions: Anyone having successfully completed a PEI exam or any faculty working in Extension are exempt from the Union

  The Program

  The Department

  The MSU Civil Engineering Department anticipates that the engineering and construction community will evolve quickly with several very fundamental precepts for success. Among these is the premise that the engineers and constructors of the future will continue to rely on fundamental engineering science and contemporary computational tools to guide their choices. We therefore choose to focus on fundamental engineering basics and the application of modern engineering tools. Our civil and environmental engineering programs will be acknowledged for their strong emphasis and rigor in engineering science, design, and applications. Our construction programs will be acknowledged for their emphasis on engineering and management skills and the application of those skills to the construction industry. The emphasis of these programs will continue to be preparation of students for professional practice in the engineering and construction industries.

  The College

  The Norm Asbjornson College of Engineering comprises five academic departments (Chemical & Biological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and is home to the following research centers: Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ), Western Transportation Institute ( WTI ), Montana Microfabrication Facility ( MMF ) and the Subzero Science and Engineering Research Facility; the Montana Manufacturing Extension Center ( MMEC ); and the Army and Air Force ROTC Units. The College enrolls approximately 4,000 students with more than 200 studying in graduate degree programs. Doctoral degree programs include a Ph.D. in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Engineering with options in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

  Excitement in the College is building in anticipation of the opening of the new Norm Asbjornson Hall. This innovative facility will transform engineering education and scholarly activity at MSU .
