  Description

  THE ROLE

  The Oregon Chief Executive provides strategic and operational leadership to the Oregon Service Areas to achieve organization goals consistent with the philosophy and Mission of Providence. The Chief Executive is accountable for operations results and growth in the health care delivery system in Oregon; is a key member of the senior leadership team for Providence and participates in both operational and strategic decision-making to accomplish the goals and objectives of the health system; and selects and evaluates Service Area Chief Executives and other executives consistent with the goals and mission of Providence. The Chief Executive also represents Providence’s Oregon operations with local, statewide, and national legislative, regulatory, business and community groups. Serves as a key participant in System-wide strategic planning, and other processes, which are used by the Central Division to establish overall Health System direction, policies, and performance expectations.

  Aligns and advances a unified strategy that supports the growth and fulfillment of Providence’s Mission across operations in Oregon.

  Provides visible and authentic leadership voice to Providence’s works with key stakeholders, including public officials and entities, business and community partners, and supporters. Deepens support and advances policies that enhance Providence’s Vision and Mission.

  Partners with other market Chief Executives to ensure optimal operational performance across the Central Division, including direct sponsorship of division-wide initiatives.

  MAJOR CHALLENGES

  The Oregon Chief Executive will face the following challenges:

  Strengthen the market position of the service areas and increase the focus on the core business to maximize financial and operational performance.

  Explore other opportunities for collaboration and partnerships in Oregon.

  Create a common vision of the future of the Oregon market and enhance the sense of unity and commitment to that vision.

  Maximize the potential of operating an integrated delivery system, including integration in Central Division structures.

  KEY RESPONSIBILITES

  This position exercises a key leadership role for Providence and has direct accountability for Oregon healthcare operations. Works effectively with other market Chief Executives to drive division-wide operating performance and collaboration.

  As a member of the Central Division executive team, provides leadership and direction to Providence to achieve strategic, financial, and community benefit objectives; and to assure Board of Director policies are implemented.

  Exercises direct operational and strategic accountability for Oregon healthcare operations.

  Promotes in a positive manner the philosophy and mission and values of Providence throughout Oregon and with all affiliated organizations.

  Provides leadership to Providence operations and services in Oregon to assure integration and focus on the marketplace and the needs of the communities served, with a clear focus and commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

  Provides direction and coordination of the service areas to identify opportunities and threats that have implications for Oregon and to Providence.

  Consistent with System policies, recruits, hires, develops, and terminates Service Area Chief Executives, and certain officers providing leadership services.

  Ensures that effective strategic planning takes place within the service areas in Oregon.

  Ensures annual service area operating plans and budgets are tied to division and overall Providence strategic plans.

  Responsible for the financial performance of Oregon. Assures capital and operating budgets are in line with Providence objectives and guidelines. Monitors financial reports to ensure compliance with budgets and follows up with Service Area Chief Executives as necessary to affect indicated changes.

  Holds Service Area Chief Executives accountable for achieving plans and performance targets; works with them to identify and resolve issues and problems effecting operations and provides them with counsel, guidance, and direction as appropriate.

  Maintains effective liaison with external publics in Oregon State and nationally to further the objectives and success of the Providence. Plays a key role in defining and pursuing legislative and public advocacy efforts in Oregon. Represents Providence in Oregon with the outside public and private groups and organizations.

  Works with community/regional boards and medical staffs to further the development of integrated delivery systems that improve the health status of the communities served.

  QUALIFICATIONS

  Education:

  A master’s degree in health or Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field is preferable.Experience:

  At least ten years of significant leadership experience in a health care delivery organization is required. The Chief Executive should have personal values compatible with those of Providence and be comfortable administering a Catholic-sponsored organization. In addition, the following:

  Be a strong executive with considerable experience and background in operations.

  Possesses significant health system experience in an environment that is comparable to Oregon and has a commitment to the system model.

  Possesses strong business skills, including finance, negotiation, and business planning.

  Demonstrates a track record of success in working with physicians, and a genuine attitude of respect for them.

  Strong strategic thinker.

  Catholic healthcare experience preferred.

  The amounts listed are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
