About Cardiac Ultrasound Tech - Cardiology Laboratory

  MD Anderson Cancer Center has a Cardiac Ultrasound Tech opportunity in its Cardiology Laboratory department. The ideal candidate will have at least a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience performing echocardiography testing. Candidates with pediatric experience performing pedi echocardiography testing is a preferred.

  SUMMARY

  Function: Performs ultrasound examinations of the heart to image two and three-dimensional slices of the heart. Performs accurate assessment of the velocity of blood and cardiac tissue at any arbitrary point using pulsed or continuous wave doppler ultrasound to assess cardiac valve areas and function, any abnormal communications between the left and right side of the heart, any leaking of blood through the valves (valvular regurgitation), and calculation of the cardiac output as well as the Ejection fraction.

  Scope: Performs all modalities of Echocardiography, including assessment: 2D, M-Mode, Color flow and continuous wave doppler, Stress echocardiography, Pharmacological stress echocardiography, Transesophageal echocardiograms.

  The Cardiac Sonographer performs patient assessments, acquires and analyzes data obtained with ultrasound equipment, provides a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management, and utilizes problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.

  ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  Performs all modalities of echocardiography, including assessment: 2D, M-Mode, Color flow and continuous wave doppler, Stress echocardiography, Pharmacological stress echocardiography, Transesophageal echocardiograms. Must be able to analyze patient's clinical history, identify the purpose of the examination, and expand the examination as necessary to answer the clinical questions.

  Performs quantitative analysis of Echocardiographic studies, including systolic function (ejection fraction and wall motion analysis), diastolic function, pulmonary pressure, hemodynamic assessment, assessment of valvular abnormalities, changes in gradients, and critical values.

  Prepares equipment for procedures to be performed. Cleans and disinfects equipment following patient use. Maintains equipment cleaning logs.

  Participates in the collection and documentation of quality assurance information. Reports critical values immediately once identified.

  Adheres to laboratory policies and procedures, safety rules, and infection control policies.

  EDUCATION

  Required: High school diploma or equivalent

  Preferred: Associates degree; Technical school

  LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  Required: 1) Certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 2) Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) -or- Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

  EXPERIENCE

  Required: Two years of experience in performing echocardiography testing. With preferred degree, no experience required.

  Preferred: Performing pediatric echocardiography testing; pedi experience.

  Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
