About the Department
The Bioinformatics Core within the University of Chicago BiologicalSciences Division offers highly skilled services and expertise designedto allow investigators to take full advantage of high-throughputtechnologies. The Bioinformatics Core\'s work combines the use ofpowerful computing resources, advanced analytics tools, and a commitmentto security to transform large amounts of raw data into meaningfulresults. Some of the services we provide include the bioinformaticsanalysis of high-throughput biological data, including genomics andproteomics, using our well-defined analysis pipelines; consultingservices for custom analysis beyond our standard pipelines, includinggenome-wide association studies; and grant writing assistance, includingassistance fully developing the bioinformatics components of a grant,cost analysis, letters of support, and documenting the availability oftools and expertise to complete the research indicated. This at-willposition is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant fundingwhich is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract.Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grantfunds and satisfactory job performance.
Job Summary
The job uses best practices and knowledge of data algorithms and usespecialized computer software to identify and classify components ofscientific biological systems.
As a Bioinformatician, you will use strong scientific knowledge andprogramming skills to design and implement bioinformatics services forresearch projects at the Biological Sciences Division. You will befocused on hands-on technical activities for a wide range ofhigh-throughput genomics technologies, including the applications ofNext Generation Sequencing, spanning pipeline development, optimization,operations, and support.
Responsibilities
Architecture and Design - participates in the definition anddocumentation of requirements, architecture and design of web-basedapplications.Software Development - develops, tests, documents, deploys andmaintains high-quality software, including REST interfaces.Team Coordination and Professional Development - contributes to teamcoordination and development activities, including project planning,project reporting, and recruitment.Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problemsand identifies opportunities for technical improvement andperformance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensureappropriate standards are met.Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research,teaching, and/or administrative projects.Develop programs to perform analyses and generate both routine andad hoc reports.Guides with researchers to analyze problems, recommendtechnology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies.Performs other related work as needed.Minimum Qualifications
