  Job Overview

  The GEMS Program has a 40-year history of preparing disadvantaged students from groups underrepresented in the medical profession for success in medical school. This school of medicine-based, pipeline program provides nearly 92% of the School of Medicine’s underrepresented student population enrolled in the MD program at Georgetown School of Medicine. The program is managed by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

  The Basic Science Learning Facilitator (BSLF) is solely responsible for teaching the educational objectives of the medical science modules and graduate courses for the Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies (GEMS) Program. Knowledge domains include, but are not limited to, Gross Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology and Microbiology.

  The successful candidate is responsible for the GEMS curriculum design, implementation and evaluation in alignment with the School of Medicine’s curriculum for allopathic medicine, with significant emphasis on classroom teaching requiring expertise to promote mastery learning and advanced academic skills’ competencies to successfully prepare students for the rigor of medical education. The BSLF must possess outstanding teaching and cooperative learning skills, and possess strong interpersonal skills to foster an interactive learning environment with respectful classroom management for a cohort of 30-35 underrepresented students annually.

  Work Interactions

  The BSLF reports to the Director, GEMS Program. The knowledge and skills competencies of the BSLF support the educationally diverse and inclusive learning environment underscored in the university Jesuit values and mission, and as required for the school of medicine’s continuing accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. The BSLF also engages the medical module academic directors and faculty in exchange of best pedagogical practices and resources for the benefit of all students enrolled in academic programs in the school of medicine. Lastly, the BSLF provides enrichment experiences for middle school, high school and undergraduate pipeline programs administered jointly by the Dean for Medical Education and the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion as an anchoring commitment of the University for community outreach in the District of Columbia, and professional and personal development of the next generation of physicians and biomedical researchers espoused in the School of Medicine’s mission.

  Requirements and Qualifications

  Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences with emphasis Gross Anatomy, Microscopic Anatomy, Embryology, Neuroanatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology and Microbiology.

  Four years teaching experience in a health professions curriculum with application to clinical contexts.

  Four years academic skills and learning strategies advising experience in higher education.

  Two years’ experience with direct engagement and teaching of a cohort of underrepresented students in higher education.

  Two years’ experience with anatomical dissection of a human cadaver.

  Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical methods for allopathic medicine context.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  MD or Ph.D. in a basic medical science.

  Seven years teaching experience in graduate level biomedical science courses.

  Two years teaching experience in a health professions degree program.

  Five years’ experience with direct engagement and teaching of a cohort of underrepresented students in higher education
