Role at a Glance:

　　The Department of Pathology and Cell Biology is seeking highly motivated individuals to join The Laboratory of Transfusion Biology. Our lab studies red blood cell (RBC) and platelet (patho)physiology, factors that affect component quality for transfusion, and immune responses to transfused products. The proposed projects include: (1) genetic and environmental factors that modulate RBC and platelet function during health and disease, (2) identification of risk factors for RBC and platelet alloimmunization, (3) elucidation of mechanisms underpinning enhanced alloimmune responses to reticulocytes, (4) understanding how the storage lesion affects individual RBC populations and platelets, and (5) defining how diet and exercise affect RBC storage quality in vitro and post-transfusion efficacy in vivo. Successful candidates will have a recent Ph.D. and/or M.D. in immunology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, or cell biology. Prior research experience in murine models, infectious agents, microscopy, and/or flow cytometry will be a plus.

　　Minimum Education Requirements:

　　Requires a Ph.D. and/or M.D. with sufficient experience in basic science or translational research, a record of independent and collaborative research, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

　　Minimum Skills Required:

　　Candidate should have knowledge of basic laboratory techniques (e.g., pipetting) and equipment (e.g., centrifuge), as well as the ability to follow standard operating procedures.

　　Preferred Qualifications:

　　A strong preference will be given to candidates with a broad knowledge of immunology, transgenic mouse models, and flow cytometry. Advanced knowledge of RBCs, erythropoiesis, stress erythropoiesis, oxidative biology, and/or alloimmunity is preferred.
