  Job title: Associate Editor, Chemistry Books

  Location: New York - Hybrid working model

  Purpose of the Role

  Responsible for the strategic growth, development and editorial management of a portfolio in the Chemistry Books Editorial team. The role involves acquisition of book projects; market/competitive research; coordinates and/or negotiates publishing agreements; evaluates book proposals offered by authors/editors and submitted manuscripts to assess acceptability of manuscript; travels to conferences/campus visits for acquisitions purposes; works with electronic systems as needed; monitors schedules for projects; developing and maintaining a large network of authors/editors; liaises with other Springer personnel in production, marketing, and sales.

  Responsibilities:

  Strategic development of Chemistry book portfolio with particular focus in the fields of Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, Chemical Information and Chemical Processes

  Learns and performs key publishing acquisition activities with development guidance from manager / peers, including

  Soliciting, reading, and evaluating proposals and manuscripts to determine commercial viability, audience, market, and suitability for the list

  Researching market trends to identify new authors, new titles and new products

  Managing the backlist associated with the assigned areas, maintaining profitable relationships with existing authors,book series editors and editorial board members

  Identifying and supporting authors and editors in developing their book projects

  Negotiates publishing contract terms

  Remaining a point of contact for authors/editors throughout publication process

  Builds an understanding of editorial policies and processes, ensuring they are consistently applied across activities and goals set by editorial management are met

  Develops and maintains a good network of authors/editors through various engagement activities within the research community

  Continually promotes and builds the brand through virtual interactions as well as travelling widely to academic conferences and campus visits.

  Maintains continuous cooperation and dialogue with editorial service, marketing, production and other relevant departments concerning individual projects as well as general questions of mutual interest

  Identify market potential and developing new products and titles to suit those markets

  Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  College degree in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline

  Fluency in English, both orally and written

  High level of computer literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers)

  Excellent communication and influencing skills

  Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team

  Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks

  Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines

  Editorial experience desirable but not essential

  US Annualized Base Salary Range: $60,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
