  Description

  Serves as program director for research study funded by the National Institutes of Health to promote a more diverse future STEM and cancer workforce, by involving K-12 students in informal science education programs (after school and summer) to investigate interventions designed to evaluate student changes in program content knowledge, intent to pursue a future career in STEM, and improvements in self-efficacy and other student outcomes.

  JOB DESCRIPTION:

  Reports to principal investigators (PI’s) of research projects.

  Exercises considerable latitude and independent judgment in overseeing the day-to-day operations of funded research projects.

  Serves as a consultant and trainer of other study staff, collaborators, and students.

  Supervises other study staff, trainees, students, and interns as appropriate and assigned.

  Provides technical expertise in rationale, research and methods of collection and analysis ofdata sets for a variety of research projects funded by NIH and other agencies.

  Using an advanced knowledge of research methodology and techniques, provides leadership in the planning and implementation of data collection instruments and procedures to collect and manage required data.

  Coordinates various aspects of the study and research and intervention activities with the PI’s and study team.

  Provides direction to consultants, mentors, and other team members.

  Routinely develops research protocols and logistics and plans for study implementation.

  Communicates and collaborates with community partners, including schools,K-12 teachers and administrators, community organizations, advocacy groups, governmental agencies, and academic institutions.

  Works closely with other Emory University entities to ensure the study is conducted appropriately and in a timely fashion.

  Handles budgetary issues, expenses, orders supplies, and coordinates payments due to community partners or product vendors.

  Helps develop budgets for grant proposals by investigating and reporting costs of budgetary items.

  Plans and coordinates study-related events, team meetings, and summer workshops, student academy, after school program, exhibits at local, regional, and national meetings.

  Develops and conducts presentations, represents Emory and the study team at institutional, state, regional and national meetings and co-authors publications.

  Collaborates on or authors progress reports or other reports and summary materials.

  Contacts on-going community partners and schools and conducts outreach to new organizations and schools to build new partnerships and collaborators.

  Engages in marketing and communications related to dissemination of study information, recruitment of students and/or teachers, and efforts to recruit diverse populations to participate.

  Maintains and enhances as needed the program website, student application portal, and online data collection tools.

  Directly oversees K-12 student applications to participate in after-school and summer informal science education programs, evaluates applications, conducts interviews, and communicates with students/parents interested in programs.

  Works directly with Emory undergraduate students who serve as STEM Mentors to provide training, organize their involvement in the program, and recruit additional STEM Mentors as needed.

  Performs related responsibilities as required.

  MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Sociology, Psychology or a related discipline and five or more years of research/professional experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

  Effective writing, analytic, presentation and organizational skills.

  Experience managing and executing multiple projects and working with senior health policy makers and executives is preferred.

  Experience conducting focus groups.

  PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  Experience with collecting and analyzing quantitative data.

  Experience with collecting and analyzing qualitative data, including prior work conducting focus groups.

  Regulatory experience, including working with IRB for study approvals, amendments, and writing informed consent and other regulatory documents.

  Ability to write and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences, including professional scientists and researchers, K-12 and secondary education students, parents, and community stakeholders.

  Prior experience in community-engaged programs or other types of research.

  Knowledge of REDCap or other database skills.

  Ability to reviews and edits text, protocols, manuscripts, study forms, and other research materials.

  Conducts literature searches and effectively summarizes reported research findings and their application to the research.

  NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
