Job Summary:
The Associate Dean partners closely with executive and physician leadership of the University of Colorado School of Medicine (SOM) and CU Medicine (the faculty practice) to provide strategic and operational direction of the primary care and multi-specialty community practice free-standing clinic sites. The Associate Dean also provides guidance, direction, leadership, and mentorship to leaders and employees within the organization. They will oversee and implement strategies to ensure staff success, engagement, and development within the division.
The Associate Dean:
Directs the integration & onboarding of new community practices and ongoing operations of established community practices.
Leads and oversees community practice programmatic development and implementation, general operations, staffing, regulatory compliance, and fiscal management.
Has direct fiscal responsibility for CU Medicine Primary Care Centers outside of CU Primary Care Centers – community practice fiscal responsibility resides in cognate departments.
Participates with Departmental and Executive Leadership in strategically developing and implementing community practice growth.
Partners directly with the Medical Director for Adult Health in a dyadic partnership.
Works closely with the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, Department Chairs, Directors of Finance & Administration, faculty and leadership of hospital affiliates, and the Chief Financial Officer of CU Medicine, Vice President of Business Development, CU Medicine, and Chief Operating Officer, CU Medicine.
Key Responsibilities:
Executive leadership.
Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and the Associate Deans for Clinical Affairs to ensure faculty alignment with community practice operations and performance.
Partner with University of Colorado Medicine (CU Medicine) senior leadership to ensure integration of community practice operations with revenue cycle performance, EPIC/IT infrastructure, financial performance of Primary Care Centers, and support financial performance of specialty community practice locations.
Develop effective partnerships with CU SOM Department leadership to oversee and manage both department-specific and multispecialty community practice locations.
Promote the collaborative relationship required to work successfully with Ambulatory Services leadership at appropriate affiliate hospitals to ensure a consistent patient experience regardless of the location where CU SOM faculty deliver clinical services.
Develop, lead, and direct the administrative team and direct reports while building/maintaining a Community Practice culture, including talent strategies aimed to ensure a positive working environment for all Community Practice employees.
Strategy:
Partner with CU SOM Departmental leadership on Departmental growth strategies in community practice.
Partner with CU Medicine on system-wide business development opportunities and growth strategies in community practice.
Collaborate with CU SOM Director of Access to engage key stakeholders to aid in developing and implementing new clinical technologies, such as telehealth and e-consults, to expand the options patients have for receiving high-quality, safe, and efficient health care.
Leadership:
Inspire, mentor, develop, and motivate leaders and employees within the organization.
Develop initiatives designed to increase existing team members' capabilities and increase the quantity and quality of candidates into careers within the unit.
Partner with Human Resources and other stakeholders to identify needs, develop strategies, and implement innovative solutions that decrease recruitment timelines, increase employee job satisfaction, and reduce staff turnover.
Foster a positive work culture throughout the organization that thrives on collaboration, partnership, teamwork, and providing outstanding patient care.
Operations:
Direct and lead the Community Practice Operations Teams (clinical operations, HR business operations, procurement) to develop and implement clinic operations that provide the highest quality, safety, and efficiency of clinical patient care.
Direct and lead the Community Practice Operations Team to implement standard clinic business practices across all locations in partnership with CU Medicine Revenue Services.
Partner in using Community Practice Dashboard to drive KPI performance improvement. Critical stakeholders for engagement are CU Medicine Revenue Cycle Leadership, Department Finance and Administration, and Clinical Leadership in Departments.
Direct and lead the Community Practice Integration Team to develop and implement workflows for evaluating, onboarding, integrating, and assessing new community practice locations that are thorough, consistent, efficient & complete.
Develop action plans to improve patient and provider satisfaction.
Ensure all CU SOM practices deliver care compliant with all safety and regulatory requirements.
Work in collaboration with CU SOM to develop HIPAA/privacy monitoring, reporting, and training.
Finance:
Maintain accountability for performance reporting on operations, HR, financials, and productivity metrics for each community practice location and develop mechanisms to alert CU Medicine, CUSOM, and Departments of any deviations in performance.
Maintain accountability for financial performance reporting of CU Medicine Primary Care Centers (currently six practices – the majority are Family Medicine) and develop and recommend solutions to address P&L enhancement.
Partner with Department leadership, CU Medicine, and CU SOM to prepare budgets and monitor funding and expenditures closely to ensure correct revenue and cost allocations.
Develop and manage CPD budget.
Inform CU Medicine and CUSOM leadership of any anticipated variance from the budget.
Partner with CU Medicine and the University of Colorado procurement and contracting teams to ensure efficiency, compliance, and economies of scale benefits in community practice.
Collaborate with cognate departments to:
Prepare budgets for each community practice location.
Oversee the financial performance of each community practice location.
Identify, propose, and implement opportunities for increasing clinical revenue and decreasing clinic expenses.

Work Location:
Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule. The number of days per week on campus can be negotiated and will be as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
A master's degree in business administration, public administration, health administration, finance, or a related field.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible financial, operational, quality, and safety and/or healthcare administrative leadership experience.
Two years of executive-level health care administration leadership experience.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible financial, operational, quality safety, and administrative experience in an academic medical campus or healthcare environment.
Ten (10) years of experience in strategic and operational management of multiple clinics or healthcare sites.
Previous experience and responsibility for all aspects of clinical and non-clinical practice performance, including workflow development, clinical service delivery, practice transformation, physician scheduling, staffing and HR management, revenue cycle including coding, vendor contracting, financial accountability, and performance reporting.
These are free-standing clinics operated by the CU SOM in partnership with CU Medicine. These are not hospital-owned or operated.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong background in developing and using analytics to manage practice growth and development.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of people both in writing and verbally, including the ability to present effectively in both large, formal settings and smaller informal meetings.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range ( or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $200,000 to $300,000.
