  JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  ASSISTANT TEACHING PROFESSOR OF BIORENEWABLE SYSTEMS

  Position: The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a teaching faculty member to teach several courses and assume the role of BioRenewable Systems (BRS) Undergraduate Program Advising and work on Extension Programs related to BRSs. This is a non-tenure-track faculty position that will be filled at the Assistant Teaching Professor level on a 48-week academic year appointment with a 40% Teaching and 60% Extension responsibilities. The Assistant Teaching Professor will be responsible for the instruction of several BRS undergraduate courses and will serve as the BRS undergraduate major advisor. We seek an outstanding candidate with demonstrated interests, ability, and accomplishments in interacting with and advising undergraduate students and helping them succeed in their programs. Desired expertise needed includes demonstrated background and expertise (or desire to learn) in working very closely with undergraduate students. The faculty member will maintain high teaching and learning and education standards and contribute to our positive and engaging Penn State community, including synthesizing and incorporating technologies into teaching and learning programming in the classroom. The ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across Penn State’s multi-campus system is required. Effective communication to provide creative leadership and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, industry, and numerous Penn State educational organizations [i.e., Leonard Center, Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence, etc.) is required. Demonstrated ability to function in a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary team environment is required. The person should have the capability to carry out an original, independent, innovative, and nationally visible teaching and Extension program and activities with documented measurable and qualitative impacts.

  Responsibilities: Courses the candidate will teach include, but are not limited to: (i) BE/BRS 391-Communication Skills for BE and BRS Students (core course); (ii) BRS 490-BioRenewable Systems Colloquium (core course); and (iii) BRS 422-Energy Analysis in BioRenewable Systems (core course) and other courses that may be assigned by the Department Head. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will assist the BRS Undergraduate Coordinator. Extension duties will include design and implementation of outstanding, impactful Extension programming that addresses opportunities for sustainable bio-based and agricultural energy systems. The initial focus may include farm-based Renewable Natural Gas from manure and crop materials and will involve in partnering with the established team(s) working in these areas. The faculty member will be expected to build a nationally-recognized and impactful Extension program that empowers the growth of sustainable energy and biomass opportunities in Pennsylvania and beyond. Extension programs may also include topics such as Farm Energy Efficiency, Solar Power on the Farm; Energy Answers for the Beginning Farmers, and Carbon Markets in Pennsylvania and beyond. Thus, demonstrated experience in agricultural energy area, in general, with biogas, renewables, and Extension education/outreach is preferred. Partnership with state and federal agency colleagues, citizens, private industry and other stakeholders is required.

  Qualifications: Ph.D. in BioRenewable Systems, Agricultural and Biological Engineering or related disciplines is required. This position requires excellent writing and oral communication skills. The successful candidate must have an effective and successful teaching and Extension/outreach background (or willingness to learn) and an enthusiasm for interacting with students and stakeholders, both in the classroom and non-traditional teaching and learning settings. The ability to partner with state and federal agency colleagues and other professionals is required. The successful candidate will work with colleagues at Penn State Extension for Extension/outreach programming. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date.

  The Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) Department: The mission of the ABE department is to promote global sustainability through the engineering science, business, and technical management of biological and agricultural systems. In addition to comprehensive transdisciplinary research, extension, and service activities in bioproducts, food, bioprocessing, natural resource engineering, and agricultural systems, the ABE department supports undergraduate and graduate resident education programs in: BioRenewable Systems (BS, MS, and Ph.D.), Biological Engineering (bachelor’s), Agricultural and Biological Engineering (MS and Ph.D.), and an interdisciplinary specialization in Environmental Resource Management.
