  Department Summary

  The Office of Research and Assessment in Student Services and Enrollment Management leverages research design and analysis to inform the decisions of SSEM departments in 1) enrolling and retaining high-achieving scholars; and 2) providing access, affordability, and essential services to support all students. We assist departments in the continuous assessment of their strategic goals to increase the effectiveness of operations and support student success.

  Position Summary

  The Assistant Director of Assessment – Student Services and Enrollment Management (SSEM) Research will be a caring, creative, collaborative, and student-centered professional. The Assistant Director of Assessment position is responsible for guiding data collection, evaluation, and analysis projects for SSEM departments, working with those departments on custom data and analysis needs, and scoping/executing strategic ad hoc projects. This position requires a detailed understanding of how to:

  • work with departments on defining strategic priorities,

  • combine data from multiple sources,

  • analyze and report data, and

  • synthesize information for strategic decision-making.

  This position is also responsible for the analysis and secure distribution of confidential information.

  SSEM departments include Admissions, Continuing and Professional Education, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Health Services, Housing, Orientation Programs, Registrar, and Testing Center.

  The Assistant Director will gather, assess, analyze, and report data to provide recommendations leading to the achievement of the division’s strategic goals. They must be able to lead projects of moderate to high scope and complexity and exercise independent judgment to accept, manage, and prioritize projects from SSEM departments. They will be able to independently commit and manage SSEM Research & Assessment resources to department projects.

  This strategic team member is an active participant in discussions with the VP, AVPs, and Directors when making top-level decisions in the division around department assessment, individual team member assessment, and strategic planning. They directly influence operations, staffing levels, policy decisions, and other aspects of the division’s strategic path.

  This Assistant Director reports to the Director of SSEM Research & Assessment

  This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  Minimum Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent education and experience.

  • Two (2) years of experience in technical research, assessment, or the collection, compilation, and analysis of data.

  Professional Competencies

  • Ability to conduct independent research and data analysis.

  • Project management skills.

  • Ability to use and understand data from a variety of sources with an emphasis on data accuracy and integrity.

  • Responsible stewardship and judgment with very sensitive, confidential student and university data.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Exceptional organizational, time, and project management skills, including the ability to balance competing priorities from multiple requestors, resolve problems, and determine appropriate action.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with individuals throughout all levels of SSEM and the University at large, and from diverse backgrounds and cultures.

  • Proficiency with SQL or a related programming language.

  Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or other Doctoral degree.

  • Knowledge of FERPA student privacy policies, higher education data systems, and key concepts in higher education research.

  • Experience with complex data sets including manipulating, merging, restructuring, and analyzing large data sets.

  • Specialized, advanced knowledge of statistical analysis and interpretation, including continuous and categorical data types, univariate and multivariate modeling techniques, interpretation of meaningful effects, and strategic implications of results in a higher education context.

  • Experience preparing reports or other briefing materials for high-level decision-makers.

  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative research design.
