Job SummaryThe assistant director of early learning assists in the development, implementation, and oversight of Preschool Special Education Department programs and services. This position researches, develops, and implements special education curriculum and programs throughout the Anchorage School District. The assistant director directly supervises and evaluates various special education staff, while also assisting elementary principals in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of certificated and classified special education/related services staff. The position also works collaboratively with the Special Education Department on best and inclusionary practices and professional development. If requested by a site principal, this position will also provide feedback for teacher and teaching assistant evaluations. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for supporting planning, curriculum development, assessment systems, program evaluation, extracurricular activities, personnel management, financial management, emergency procedures, and resource scheduling. The assistant director reports to and is evaluated by the director of Early Learning. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers Retirement System (TRS).
Job RequirementsThe following are required:
A bachelors degree in special education or a related area.A current Alaska teaching certificate.A current Alaska type B administrative certificate or the ability to obtain one within two years of start date. Must verify enrollment in a program no later than 60 days after the start date.A minimum of five years of teaching or work experience in special education, including supervisory experience.The following are preferred:
A master's degree in special education, educational leadership, or a related field.Three years of supervisory or program leadership experience.Experience with behavioral programs to support student need.Experience in development and implementation of staff training / professional development.Curriculum implementation and supervision experience.Experience with staff coaching and mentorship.Evidence of exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, extensive experience with conflict resolution skills, and an understanding of and the ability to deal with family and school teams special education issues.Strong knowledge of school-based services, practices, and trends in the related services disciplines and special education.Strong knowledge of district, state, and federal special education policies, regulations, and/or laws.Ability to use technology for record-keeping and research.Extensive knowledge of ethical practices and professional standards of all programs assigned within related services and special education.Essential Job Functions
Works collaboratively with the director of Early Learning and Elementary Special Education to share primary administrative responsibilities for the department.Works collaboratively with both special education and general education in supporting programs in schools.Serves as a liaison and facilitator in sensitive and difficult situations involving special education issues with families and/or teams.Provides instructional leadership and technical expertise to special education coordinators, instructional leads, department chairs, related services staff members and other special education staff members.Assists the director in preparing program budgets, annual reports, and public documents.Facilitates and monitors special education professional development activities to meet district, state, and federal compliance requirements Develops, reviews, and adjusts staffing assignments with the director.Interviews and recommends for hire certificated and classified staff.Assists administration in development of systems for state audits and documents for intensive funding.Serves as consultant for all district levels administration related to special education and Section 504.Assists with professional development and serves as a resource person to the Special Education Department.Collaborates and supports universal design for learning (UDL) practices, to include inclusive practices initiatives and positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS).Represents the special education department on curriculum review and implementation committees.Monitors district and school data related to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 plans to ensure compliance, accountability, and professional development opportunities to support federal, state, and district guidance.The Anchorage School District is an equal employment opportunity employer.
