Summary The AC Equipment Mechanic will function at the ATLANTA VAMC location. This position will also serve other VA facilities (CBOC'S) that are link to the medical center. This position is covered by AFGE bargaining unit. Responsibilities Under the general supervision of the Plant Operations Unit Supervisor, the Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic alters, repairs, maintains and modifies all heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Altering, repairing, maintaining, and modifying all heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment such as chillers, air handlers, pumps, cooling towers. Refrigeration equipment of various sizes and designs including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice machines and various types of refrigerators. Monitor medication and nutrition temperatures on Checkpoint. Work with various building automated controls such as Trane, ALC, Allerton, Carrier and Johnson. Also pneumatic controls. Work on clinical and research fume flow hoods, blood bank refrigerators and other related equipment. Utilizing all specialized tools used in the HVAC trade such as, measuring equipment (refrigeration gauges, electrical meters, air measuring devices) hand tools (torches, vacuum pumps, refrigerant recovery devices), and any other specialized tool unique to the HVAC trade. Ability to interpreted technical operation manuals , blueprints and schematics Providing advice, training, guidance and assistance for lower grade workers assigned to help on assigned task. Ability to research replacement parts, and put in purchase orders for parts and materials. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, crawling, crouching, bending, kneeling and working in awkward positions; works frequently on ladders and scaffolds; occasionally may lift and carry items weighing fifty pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination is required. The incumbent is required to work on top of buildings, on ladders and in other high places, and will crawl in pipe spaces and other tight places. The incumbent will also be required to walk on slippery surfaces and to work; 1) in extreme heat, cold and rain; 2) around toxic fumes and gases; 3) in and around asbestos containing material; 4) around high voltage electricity and moving machinery; and 5) near corrosive chemicals and heavy materials. The incumbent will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. The incumbent is frequently exposed to possibility of broken bones, scraps, burns, infections, infection diseases, etc. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
