Responsibilities
Position Summary
In this role, you will apply your expert knowledge of the MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC coding/reimbursement methodology systems, ICD-10 Official Coding Guidelines, and AHA Coding Clinic Guidelines, the National Correct Coding Initiative, and AMA’s CPT Assistant and CPT manual in the auditing of inpatient and outpatient claims.
The candidate should have a keen eye for detail, demonstrable critical thinking skills along with experience in writing policies and job aides, as well as possess the ability to prioritize, plan, and complete work independently.
Reports to the Compliance Director - Acute Care Regulatory, and works collaboratively with other Ascension Compliance leaders and team members, as needed.
Essential Job Functions
Employ industry encoder tools to perform coding/documentation reviews and audits to assess compliance and accuracy with ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes, DRG assignments, POA indicators, discharge statuses and CPT/HCPCS codes, modifiers, and APC assignments billed by hospitals to identify overpayments
Perform Medicare coverage audit and/or review services based on LCDs, LCAs and NCDs for a variety of inpatient and outpatient hospital services
Research guidelines/regulation to support audit findings such as Medicare transmittals/Manuals, LCDs, NCDs, eCFR, and CMS/OIG guidelines pertinent to assessments
Utilizing excellent communications skills, compose rationales supporting audit findings
Identify trends based on coding audit and review findings and formulate recommendations for corrective action plans
Collaborate with Revenue Cycle and other stakeholders to support charging/billing/coding activities
Serve as coding compliance subject matter expert and develop education and training for Service Line Leaders and Compliance team members
Work with other members of the Acute Care Regulatory team on projects such as compliance risk assessment and analysis, development of tools to assist in the audit process, and development of education for staff.
Adhere to AHIMA ethical coding standards, and remain abreast of changes to coding standards/regulations
Participate in variety of meetings and work groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems
Maintain a level of knowledge pertaining to governmental or coding industry new developments, requirements, and policies
Work in a high-volume production environment that is matrix driven

Requirements
Education:
High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience OR 5 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required. 2 years of leadership or management experience preferred.Additional Preferences
AHIMA medical coding certification preferred
5+ years coding auditing and medical coding experience preferred
Thorough knowledge of Medicare reimbursement guidelines and medical terminology preferred
Strong analytical, organizational, computer, and excel skills
Highly self-motivated with ability to work independently and with a team, prioritize, and handle multiple responsibilities to meet deadlines
Ability to identify opportunities for process improvement and implement solutions
Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills
Attention to detail and ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
Knowledge/understanding of healthcare compliance industry and federal laws/regulations
Demonstrated coaching and influencing skills
