The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M University (TAMU) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, non-tenure track lecturer position in Large Animal Surgery.
The lecturer will devote 50% effort to teaching and 50% to patient care.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility of this position includes clinical instruction of veterinary students in the final year of the professional curriculum and house officers (interns and residents) assigned to the Equine Soft Tissue, Equine Orthopedics, and Equine Sports Medicine and Imaging Services. Assistance with a small number of preclinical lectures and laboratories is available to the faculty member if interested. Opportunities for the faculty member to participate in continuing education of technicians, equine practitioners and horse owners may be available. The faculty member is expected to participate in the training of residents and interns in surgery, medicine, and veterinary practitioner tracks through clinical activities, journal clubs, case discussions, formal resident rounds, and other educational activities. The faculty member should be an effective teacher and able to work with persons from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds.
Patient Care: The clinical responsibility of this position will be to provide excellent patient care to horses admitted to the Equine Soft Tissue, Equine Orthopedics, and Equine Sports Medicine and Imaging Services of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital on a rotational basis. Responsibility for surgical services for livestock species may extend to the Food Animal Medical and Surgical Service when necessary. The faculty member will provide patient care as the primary senior clinician on the service or as a back-up clinician to other faculty members when needed. The faculty member will serve as a member of the clinical team along with other faculty members in the Large Animal Surgery Section. Clinical assignments, which may include a minimal amount of after-hours emergency duty, will be based on clinical needs and is shared by faculty within the Large Animal Surgery Section (which includes large animal emergency and critical care clinicians). An enthusiastic group of boarded large animal surgeons is available to provide support, input, and assistance on cases. The faculty member is also expected to consult with referring veterinarians and clients.Faculty members are expected to commit to holding themselves and colleagues accountable to the VMBS code of professional conduct. The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes over 40 faculty members with diverse backgrounds and scholarly interests. Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Field Services, Equine Community Practice, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services and Radiology. The community of Bryan and College Station have a combined approximate population of 270,000 and are an expanding and diverse metropolitan area with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree, be able to hold a Texas state veterinary license, a DEA license, and have board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or be eligible to take Phase II of the ACVS examination. Applicants are required to have interest, experience, training, and/or expertise in clinical teaching and provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of large animal surgical patients. Applicants must be committed to a team-centered atmosphere and possess excellent communication skills with animal owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff.
