The Substitute School Nurse is responsible for covering the nursesoffice at BART when the full-time nurse is off-site. Responsibilitiesinclude program nursing services, collaboration, and professionalpractice. The Substitute School Nurse is a per diem/hourly position. TheSubstitute School Nurse reports to the Principal. EXPECTATIONS ANDRESPONSIBILITIES Within the responsibility category of \"NursingServices,\" the Substitute School Nurse will - Collaborate with theparent/guardian and student, where appropriate, to develop and implementan individualized health care plan for the student - Develop a nursingdiagnosis and care plan with specific goals and interventionsdelineating school nursing actions specific to student needs andcoordinated with the efforts of other providers and School personnel andwill implement plans in a manner aimed at improving health andeducational status; - Provide medically prescribed interventions,including medication administration (based on Massachusettsregulations), and provide care to ill children on a daily basis; -Responsible for the safe dispensing of medication, and creating andoverseeing a medication delegation program; - Respond to frequentlyencountered health issues; collaborate with school counselors and assistwith crisis interventions as needed - e.g., adolescent pregnancy,substance abuse, death of a family member, and suicide -and respond tochild neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute);and - Provide first aid to injured children and staff; provide everydaycare of acutely ill children; and manage children with communicabledisease. Within the responsibility category of \"Collaboration,\" theSubstitute School Nurse will - Establish a process to identify studentsat risk for physical and psychosocial problems, communicate health needsto other School personnel as appropriate and establish a referral systemusing both internal and community resources; - Participate as a teammember, with parental consent when indicated, in sharing informationwith other team members about children with special health care problemsthat affect learning and growth; act as an advocate for the student andfamily when appropriateInclude the student and parent in the teamconference whenever possible and appropriate. Within the responsibilitycategory of \"Professional Practice,\" the Substitute School Nursewill - Apply appropriate nursing theory as the basis for decision-makingin the school setting while expanding knowledge and skills in responseto student health needs and participating in research: - Demonstratecurrent knowledge in such areas as (a) professional issues in schoolnursing; (b) school and community health; (c) communicable diseasecontrol; (d) growth and development; (e) health assessment; (f) specialhealth conditions, both chronic and acute; (g) injury prevention andemergency care; (h) health counseling, health education, and promotion;and (i) current adolescent issues. QUALIFICATIONS - Ability to handleunforeseen challenges and acute health-related situations within adynamic organization - Have a valid license to practice as a RegisteredNurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Massachusetts -Certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, AED, and First Aid froma recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association) - A team playerwith a sense of humor and a dedication to working with a diverse,creative school community.
