The position will be working across the Great Lakes Region with field visits that span within state travel in Minnesota and across the region to New York State. Virtual of flexible work arrangements is possible approximately 25% of the time. o (50%) St. Paul Campus o (25%) Remote work at field/research sites o (25%) Virtual/flexible Job Duties University of Minnesota, Department of Forest Resources and the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science are seeking a Climate Adaptation Specialist (Researcher 5) to synthesize and communicate scientific information on how a changing climate will affect lowland, riparian, wetland, and shoreline ecosystems of the Great Lakes and Midwest and Northeast US to identify and evaluate potential land management responses to reduce climate risks and facilitate adaptation. The position will work as part of the NFCH / NIACS team to (1) create synthesis products and resources that enhance the awareness and integration of climate change considerations into regional land management activities; (2) provide training and technical assistance to natural resources managers working across a variety of regional ecosystems; (3) deploy the best available science to enhance and support land management planning and decision-making processes given climate change and uncertainty. * 20% Coordinate and manage work across a multi-state region to provide technical assistance, training, and outreach on climate change vulnerability and climate-informed natural resources management adaptation options to diverse partners, including federal, tribal, state, county, municipal, academic, and private partners. * 20% Collaborate effectively with scientists and natural resource managers to synthesize research information, assess climate-related risks, and translate results into non-technical language and products for a variety of audiences across the Great Lakes and Midwest and Northeast US. * 20% Design, write, and produce a wide range of materials, including technical products, presentations, briefings, brochures, non-technical fact sheets, web-based media, case study narratives, and interactive activities. Develop communication plans, press releases, coordinated material to spread awareness of new products, tools, resources, or opportunities. * 12.5% Organize workshops, seminars, trainings, and scientific meetings for a variety of audiences. Develop and implement interactive activities to facilitate thinking in presentations, workshops, and within breakout groups. * 10% Develop and maintain connections with others such as scientists or educators who are experts in related fields to maintain awareness of the latest trends and best practices developing in the field related to natural resources, management, climate change vulnerability, and adaptation. * 12.5% Support the development of adaptation demonstration projects to be added to the Climate Change Response Framework's Adaptation Demonstration Project library * 5% Integrate diversity & inclusion training and activities into work. Required Qualifications * M.S. Degree in Forestry, Ecology, Natural Resources or closely related field and one year of research experience. * Experience organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple work projects and types of activities, while meeting and managing deadlines. * Demonstrated experience collaborating with research and management partners within the field of natural resources. * Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a varied mix of internal and external partners from diverse communities and cultures using act, diplomacy, initiative, and sound judgement. * Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications * Advanced education or job experience related to disturbance ecology, terrestrial ecosystem dynamics, climate change, climate adaptation, wetlands, forestry, and/or ecosystem carbon cycling. * Demonstrated experience (e.g. project management) in ecosystem restoration, climate adaptation, or natural resources management in terrestrial ecosystems such as lowland and riparian forests or wetlands. * Knowledge of Midwest and Northeast lowland, riparian, and wetland ecosystems. * Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications. * Demonstrated ability in compiling and synthesizing scientific information. * Ability to lead; think creatively; proactively adapt to changing environments; act decisively; and motivate, develop, inspire, affirm, and empower others. * Ability to perform in a dynamic work environment with colleagues in different physical locations. * Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in both technical and non-technical terminology with a variety of audiences. * Potential ability to apply critical thinking skills in complex situations.
