Summary
Seeking a postdoctoral fellow for an NSF-funded research project on privacy, trust and power dynamics related to Smart Homes - households enabled with internet-of-things devices and systems. The distinct power dynamics, social conditions and intimate situations of the home create privacy and surveillance implications in the Smart Home that depend on the types of roles, relationships, and residences entailed in them. Overall, the goal of the grant is to understand these distinct implications, and to identify ways to enable people to live in a trustworthy Smart Home, one whose security they can understand and manage, and with strong mechanisms to protect their privacy. A particular focus includes digital health technologies and use of Smart devices in the home for health-related activities. The postdoc will work under the supervision ofProfessor Denise Anthony (https://sph.umich.edu/faculty-profiles/anthony-denise.html) and sit in the department ofHealth Management & Policy (https://sph.umich.edu/hmp/) at theSchool of Public Health (https://sph.umich.edu/) at theUniversity of Michigan (https://umich.edu/) .
Required Qualifications*
The successful candidate will have a PhD in sociology (or a related field such as informatics, HCI, health policy) and have training in multiple methodologies, including qualitative interviewing and analysis, survey methods, and quantitative statistical analysis. The postdoc will play a leading role in developing and carrying out interviews, surveys, and analysis to address the project's research questions. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and conduct independent research as well.
Additional Information
This is a term limited position for one year starting August 1, 2024 (though start date can be somewhat flexible), with a 12-month annual salary of $65,000, with the possibility of renewal for a second year upon satisfactory performance and funding availability. The position also comes with health benefits, and some support for conference travel, as well as opportunities to participate in department activities and seminars and professional development activities.
