  Brief Position Overview

  The Honors College seeks individuals to serve as instructors for HONR 201 and 202, Texts and Critics.

  We are especially interested in candidates who, through their life experiences, research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to excellence in undergraduate education, specifically in the Honors College at Montana State University.

  We welcome applications from individuals who may have had nontraditional career paths, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside of academia.

  We seek candidates who possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute to the academic success and retention of students in the Honors College.

  We seek candidates whose experiences have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

  Position Details

  General Statement

  Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

  Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

  The Honors College Dean will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

  Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, from a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the Honors College. The salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

  We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

  Duties and Responsibilities

  We hope to attract applicants who can teach in a diverse University community and have demonstrated ability in helping students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

  Teach on-campus courses

  Advising, evaluating and assisting students

  Participation in weekly faculty meetings, Mondays at noon

  Participation in, and attendance of special events as part of the HONR 201/202 curriculum, including the Honors Presents lecture series

  Meeting regularly with, collaborating with, and evaluating the student fellow assigned to your section

  Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department

  Demonstrated and effective teaching experience

  Master’s Degree in a relevant field combined with either college teaching experience and/or professional experience

  Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  Doctoral degree or equivalent experience in an appropriate field of instruction or professional activity as determined by the department

  Academic/professional experience

  Demonstrated experience teaching interdisciplinary courses

  Demonstrated commitment to supporting a diverse body of students, faculty, and staff.

  Each Faculty Fellow co-facilitates with an upper-division Student Fellow who has previously taken the course.

  The Successful Candidate Will

  Have the ability to relate to freshmen and to develop classroom rapport with students

  The ability to mentor and inspire a diverse student body

  Have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty and staff

  Possess excellent written and oral communication skills

  Be skilled in utilizing engaging pedagogy that involves students in the learning process

  Have an appreciation of diverse constituencies and add intellectual diversity to the department

  Dedication to supporting and enhancing Montana State University’s initiative for diversity, equity and inclusiveness

  The position for which you have applied MAY BE a Union position. Union affiliation is determined by job duties and the collective bargaining unit.

  Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ). Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues. This is a condition of employment.   Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.

  The Program

  Texts and Critics are the foundational critical thinking courses required of all students in the Honors College. The theme for HONR 201, “Texts and Critics” is “Knowledge”, and for HONR 202, it is “Imagination”. Individual sections of “T&C” meet at a variety of times. Each Faculty Fellow will co-facilitate a section of Texts and Critics with an upper-division Student Fellow who has previously taken the course. Class size is limited to 16-18 students, and discussions center on a variety of outstanding texts. Fellows who have taught “Texts and Critics” found the experience a refreshing change of pace and personally rewarding.

  The Department

  The mission of the Honors College at Montana State University is to prepare academically motivated students to think critically and independently within a challenging and supportive community, by partnering with all other colleges, departments, and programs at the university.

  The Honors College fosters excellence in undergraduate education through the integration of studies in the sciences, arts and humanities and through undergraduate research. As lifelong learners, Honors students will continually develop their critical thinking skills along with their ability to articulate and respect diverse viewpoints, as future leaders dedicated to serving and improving our state and our world.

  The Honors College supports an inclusive learning environment where diversity and individual differences are understood, respected, appreciated, and recognized as a source of strength.

  Honors College Program Learning Outcomes:

  Integration: Honors students will be able to integrate concepts and methodologies from multiple disciplines and diverse viewpoints in Honors seminars

  Research: Honors students will engage in research, using appropriate disciplinary and scholarly skills, resulting in a senior thesis

  Critical thinking: Honors students will continually develop their ability to think critically and independently by actively engaging in discussions of complex issues throughout the Honors curriculum

  Communication: Honors students will communicate clearly and precisely in multiple formats including written prose, verbal exposition, and audio/visual projects

  Community Engagement: Honors students will engage in activities that promote civic mindedness, global citizenship and the stewardship of our natural environment.

  The College

  The Honors College at Montana State University provides opportunities for students to study, conduct research, and exchange ideas in a challenging and supportive interdisciplinary academic environment. In addition to taking small enrollment classes with outstanding faculty members, honors students may enroll in honors seminars and courses, and engage in independent study and research opportunities. The Honors College currently enrolls 1,700+ students representing all the academic colleges at MSU . Honors students have brought great distinction to Montana State University, by serving as ambassadors, tutors, organization leaders, agents of outreach and service; by gaining admittance to the nation’s top graduate schools (Yale, MIT , Stanford, Harvard etc.); and by winning major scholarships such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman and Goldwater Awards ( MSU is among the top ranked institutions in the U.S. with regard to number of Goldwater Scholars with 86 awards).

  Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University ( MSU ) is composed of eight academic colleges and a graduate school and boasts a friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the University hosts an enrollment of over 16,000 students.

  MSU is located in Bozeman, Montana, an extended community of about 75,000 nestled in the Rocky Mountains in Southwest Montana. In addition to providing access to an extraordinary ecosystem for teaching and research programs, Bozeman is renowned for year-round recreational and cultural opportunities to include access to world class ski areas, multiple blue ribbon trout streams and the Gallatin National Forest. The local airport is served by six airlines with over thirty flights a day.

  Named an All American City, Bozeman boasts high-quality medical facilities, a very low crime rate, many fine restaurants, acclaimed public and private schools, a symphony orchestra and choir, opera and ballet companies, and nationally known events such as the Sweet Pea Festival of the Arts held in early August of each year. The K-12 educational system, growing reputation of Montana State University, and pristine natural environment of the area combine to make Bozeman one of America’s most desirable university towns. Bozeman is located in the beautiful Gallatin Valley, 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park.
