About the position
The Anadromous Fish Screen and Habitat Program in Salmon, Idaho isseeking 1 Fisheries Technician (non-benefited) to lead a fisheriesmonitoring and evaluation crew. This position is part of aninterdisciplinary team that operates a large fish screening and habitatrestoration program throughout the Upper Salmon Basin.
Dates needed: Late May - October 2024, but dates are flexible.
General Information
The Upper Salmon Basin is a beautiful place to work and is surrounded byample outdoor recreation opportunities including fishing, hunting,hiking, camping, floating, and mountain biking. Job will require someovernight travel to some of the most scenic places in Idaho. Housing isnot provided. Work schedule will vary throughout the summer.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a B.S. in Fisheries Science, Wildlife Science, orrelated field. Applicants should have some leadership experience andwillingness to work collaboratively. Applicants should have basicknowledge of anatomy, life history and ecology of various salmonidspecies and the ability to learn salmonid identification. Should be ableto operate personal computers/bluetooth connected devices. Experience:recording, entering, and summarizing data; identifying various fishspecies; diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems. Applicantsmust possess a valid drivers license.
With or without reasonable accommodation, applicants must be able tolift up to 60 pounds, pack up to 40 pounds for several miles, and walkup to eight miles a day along stream banks and trails. Applicants mustbe willing to travel extensively and stay in travel trailers and/or campin semi-remote areas, work in adverse weather conditions, long days, andon holidays, weekends, or nights as necessary.
Responsibilities
Position will lead crew in monitoring the abundance, distribution, andhabitat use of salmonids. Primary duties include: stream electrofishing,snorkeling, habitat surveys, recording data, spawning ground surveys,operating and maintain PIT Tag detection systems, and maintaining allfield equipment. Crew lead will be responsible for planning fieldhitches, coordinating meals and gear, acquiring access permission fromprivate landowners and partner agencies, supervising field staff,providing quality oversight for data collection and entry, managinglarge data sets. Some work with other regional staff and field crewswill be required including operating screw traps, installing and runningfish weirs, assisting with habitat restoration and revegetationprojects, and monitoring and maintaining fish passage structures. On thejob training will be provided for all activities.
