Description
Amazon’s location data and routing inputs play a crucial role in our vehicle routing problems and other critical applications for Amazon Last Mile Delivery. As part of the Last Mile Geospatial Science team, you’ll partner closely with other scientists in a collegial environment with a clear path to business impact. You will be part of a team which develops machine learning/deep learning models for building maps, learning geocodes, organizing addresses, estimating transit times, and understanding transporter activities. You will be expected to be an innovator as we chart new courses with our delivery support technologies. Successful candidates will have a broad and deep knowledge of machine learning and deep learning, the ability to map models into scalable, production models, the communication skills necessary to explain complex technical approaches to a variety of stakeholders and customers, and be able to take an iterative approach to tackle big, long term problems.
Key job responsibilities
Build or improve machine learning or deep learning models in the areas of map building, address organization, geocode assignment, transit time estimation, or transporter activity classification. Build scalable solutions to clean and featurize large volumes of geospatial and spatiotemporal data. Build research prototypes and scale successful prototypes to production code, working with engineering partners. Write and present scientific reports and papers. Publish internally and externally. File patents.
Technologies in use (may vary by project) include Pytorch, Tensorflow, scikit learn, XGBoost, Spark, SageMaker, and a number of AWS technologies for big data processing. Work may also involve exploring applications of cutting-edge LLMs and VLMs to solve problems in our space. Primary programming language is Python; some models involve knowledge of Java.
A day in the life
We work backwards from the needs of the Amazon delivery associate and ensure that we provide the cleanest and most accurate geospatial model of the world they encounter every day. Internally, we partner closely with Amazon's vehicle routing and delivery planning and transporter experience teams, to ensure we together build safe and efficient routes, coupled with an intuitive and friction-free navigation experience.
If you are not sure that every qualification on the list above describes you exactly, we'd still love to hear from you! At Amazon, we value people with unique backgrounds, experiences, and skillsets. If you’re passionate about this role and want to make an impact on a global scale, please apply!

About the team
We are a team of scientists with breadth in ML, with many having expertise in deep learning as well as a domain such as CV or NLP. We use cutting-edge deep learning and computer vision for some applications, such as map building, while leveraging NLP solutions for others, such as organizing addresses. We are currently actively leveraging LLMs and VLMs in many of our solutions. Often, techniques from different areas have to be combined, using innovative modeling approaches, for a successful production solution. We have strong ties to engineering, product, and other science partners within Amazon Last Mile.
We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:
Bellevue, WA, USA
Basic Qualifications
PhD, or Master's degree and 4+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience
3+ years of building models for business application experience
Experience in patents or publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals
Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application
Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Pytorch, Tensorflow, or MXNet
Preferred Qualifications
Experience using Unix/Linux
Experience in professional software development
