  Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) membership or equivalent certification.

  Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL; interpret and transliterate between ASL and spoken English at a speed required by the assignment, which may include a variety of settings such as a classroom, one-on-one meeting, or public event.

  Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.

  Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  Ability to provide accurate and effective signed interpreting services in a variety of settings, including in a graduate level academic setting.

  Knowledge of and adherence to principles of ethical behavior and Code of Professional Conduct set by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  Administrative, coordinating and recordkeeping skills.

  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  This is a fully benefited, full-time Harvard University position that has been funded for two years. There is the possibility of renewal, contingent on funding, university priorities and satisfactory job performance.

  Reporting to the Associate Director of University Disability Resources (UDR), the American Sign Language Interpreter and Coordinator (“ASL Interpreter/Coordinator”) is a two year term, full time benefited position that provides ASL to spoken English and spoken English to ASL interpreting services for the benefit of Deaf and hard of hearing University students and other community members. This work will be performed in a variety of academic and non-academic settings both on and off campus, including classrooms, faculty-student meetings, theatrical productions, administrative meetings, and public campus events. The ASL Interpreter/Coordinator also manages scheduling and coordination of additional ASL interpreters and captioners to facilitate the provision of accommodations for the University community. This position requires a combination of daytime, evening, and occasional weekend work.

  This position will also involve education of community members on the interpreter role and how to work effectively and appropriately with an interpreter. It will include coordinating with faculty and teaching staff to obtain materials necessary to prepare for interpreting content that may at times be technical and/or complex. Preparation for academic setting interpreting may include researching and becoming familiar with technical terminology.

  The person in this position will also perform related office work, such as but not limited to, record keeping, data entry, and compiling usage statistics. This position will also include other duties as assigned.
