SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Provider is to provide quality direct and /or indirect patient care clinically, administratively and/or academically. The APP impacts quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the care continuum.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Activities:
Conducts inpatient rounds with attending physicians and communicates pertinent clinical information based on physical examination and review of patient data.
Evaluates patients and communicates pertinent clinical information based on history, physical examination and review of patient data to attending physicians.
Facilitates appointments and testing for new patients and consultation patients to the department.
Manages daily patient problems and emergency situations as they arise and documents actions implemented and their resolution.
Completes PME's, admission H&P, consultation notes, daily progress notes and discharge summaries in compliance with institutional and departmental guidelines.
Requests consultations and communicates with other services, caregivers and outside providers to coordinate patient care.
Coordinates admissions as needed by the patient and as dictated by training.
Conducts hospice referrals and coordinates discharge planning.
Orders patient medications, treatments and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority and consistent with institutional policies and procedures.
Assists research nurses with patient protocol-related events.
Participates in the education of students and new-hires.
Performs procedures such as discontinuing hepatic arterial infusion line, skin biopsy, lumbar puncture, ommaya tap with or without drug instillation, venipuncture and intra-tumoral injections.
Assists with the management of unscheduled patients.
Serves as the liaison for new patient referrals to the department from outside physicians requiring the following: assesses patient for protocol eligibility, coordinates patient appointments with physician availability.
Schedules special procedures with the appropriate department such as CVC/PICC insertions, angiogram, image-guided biopsy or aspiration, fine needle aspiration, hepatic arterial embolization and infusions.
Collects patient test results, acts on abnormalities, and presents results to the physician.
Monitors and follows up on results of tests including lab results, diagnostic imaging, other studies and pathology reports and acts on abnormalities.
Requests consultations and communicates with other services and outside providers to coordinate patient care.
Orders patient medications, treatments and tests within authorized delegated prescriptive authority and consistent with institutional policies and procedures.
Other Activities:
Collaborates with the research team on the design of clinical protocols, creating or reviewing order sets, and/or management of protocol related events.
Assesses patients for protocol eligibility and notifies research team of potential protocol candidates.
Assesses patients for symptoms, side effects and toxicities pertaining to standard treatments and investigational studies.
May deliver medical presentations within the institution and at the local, state, and national level.
Periodic duties as requested by supervising physicians and allowed by the state and federal laws.
Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication skills.
Clinical Research:
Participates in clinical research by completing database forms, reviewing medical records for information, and interviewing patients/families for information.
Collaborates with the medical staff, research nurses, and other health professionals to complete research initiatives.
Administrative Activities:
Completes paperwork which may include letters, FMLA, disability and insurance forms for patients by manually writing or typing necessary information or by dictated letter.
Completes peer to peer reviews and provides information to facilitate insurance authorization for testing and treatment.
Responsible for billing utilizing the Electronic Billing System to complete charges within 24 hours of providing care to patients.
Continuing Education:
Attends continuing medical education opportunities to meet licensure and certification requirements and attends CME courses related to Melanoma Medical Oncology as departmental staffing and funds allow.
Attends and actively participates in departmental meetings and conferences as scheduled.
EDUCATION
Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
EXPERIENCE
Preferred:
At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION
Required:
Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.
Preferred:
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
