About Wildlife Biologist

  Summary This position is located in the WO-NFS, Lands, Minerals & Geology Staff. The position will provide wildlife expertise in the protection, management, and improvement of wildlife within the framework of multiple-use management. The position will be part of a national team focused on supporting forest & district staffs with the environmental reviews and authorization processes for broadband-related projects. For additional information, contact Joey Perry at [email protected] or 530-251-3286. Responsibilities Correlate wildlife management with timber, recreation, special uses, and watershed management. Participate on an interdisciplinary team for developing integrated land and resource management plan. Prepare environmental analysis reports and National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) required documents to meet legal requirements for forest plan revision or amendments. Establish and maintain close working relationships with state and federal agencies to coordinate work pertaining to forest planning. Participate in the formulation and evaluation of alternatives and in the development of final recommendations for environmental analysis reports. Participate on an interdisciplinary team to determine the status of endangered, threatened and species of conservation concern. Provide course descriptions as necessary. Basic Requirement: Degree: biological science that included: At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. or Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: GS-11 level: One (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include meeting one or more of the following: Prepared wildlife management input for the unit land management planning team; Prepared wildlife environmental analysis reports; Developed biological evaluations for review by journey-level biologists; Worked cooperatively with State wildlife resource agencies; Coordinated wildlife management with timber, grazing, minerals and recreation and other resource programs. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. CTAP/ICTAP candidates must be rated and determined to be well qualified (or above) based on an evaluation of the competencies listed in the How You Will Be Evaluated section. When assessed through a score-based category rating method, CTAP/ICTAP applicants must receive a rating of at least 85 out of a possible 100. Veterans who are preference eligible or who have been separated from the armed forces under honorable conditions after three years or more of continuous active service are eligible for consideration under the Veteran's Employment Opportunity Act (VEOA). Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) provides current or former temporary or term employees of federal land management agencies opportunity to compete for permanent competitive service positions. Individuals must have more than 24 months of service without a break between appointments of two or more years. Service must be in the competitive service and have been at a successful level of performance or better. Part-time and intermittent service will be credited only for time actually worked. Non-pay status such as leave without pay is credited for up to six months in a calendar year; anything beyond six months is not credited.
