The Position
The Portland Water Bureau is seeking a Water Resources Education Assistant (CSA II) to join their team!
Job Appointment: Casual
Work Schedule:
15-35 hours per week depending on season and workload. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.
Typical seasonal schedule outlined below. Final work schedule to be negotiated between employee and manager.
April 2024 - June 2024: 30-35 hours per week (7-8 hours per day)
July 2024 - August 2024: 15-25 hours per week
September 2024 - November 2024: 30-35 hours per week (7-8 Hours per day)
November 2024-April 2025: 15-25 hours per week
Note: This Community Service Aide (CSA II) position has a maximum of 1,400 hours in a calendar year.
Work Location: This position is based at the Portland Building, 1120 SW 5th Ave., Portland, OR, 97204. However, during field season, the majority of the work will be out in the Portland Community. More work location details below.

Position Summary
The Portland Water Bureau’s Education and Cultural Resources Program supports the organization’s source water protection and equity goals. To accomplish this, our program presents natural resource, regulatory, operations, and infrastructure content regarding Portland’s drinking water system. We share this content with Portland’s diverse communities, local organizations, city employees, students (Pre-K through college), elected officials, and more. This work supports the public closure of the Bull Run Watershed by providing supervised access to the area, fostering an informed community of water consumers and decision-makers. This program also leads the bureau’s cultural resources management and compliance efforts. This includes ensuring compliance with historic preservation regulatory requirements and leading the bureau’s tribal relations work under the guidance of the City’s Tribal Relations Program.
The Portland Water Bureau’s Water Resources Education and Cultural Resources Program seeks a part-time aide who is passionate about the Pacific Northwest's natural history and enjoys teaching. The Water Resources Education Assistant (Community Service Aide II) works closely with our Water Resources Education Coordinators, supporting all aspects of the Education Program. This role will be required to obtain Wilderness First Aid training - it will be part of the training process. More details of this work are outlined below.
Bull Run School Field Trip Program (April-June, September-November)
We bring students (3rd grade through high school) on full-day field trips to the Bull Run Watershed. Students test their drinking water, learn how the forest helps protect drinking water, and tour a 1929 dam.
As a Water Resources Education Assistant, you would meet a lead Water Bureau educator at the school in the morning, ride the bus with the students, and give part of the introduction about the water system. Some days, this role drives to Bull Run to set up equipment on Bull Run Dam 1. Afterwards, you would lead activity rotations, and either ride the bus back to the school or break down equipment set up and drive back to town. A total of three Water Bureau educators work as a team to make each day successful.
Classroom Education (November-April)
The Water Bureau encourages teachers and students to get to know their water system. The Water Resources Education Assistant helps facilitate activities about a variety of water-related topics including - water quality, water pressure, water conservation, fish, and more. These activities typically take place in classrooms or other spaces in local schools.
Bull Run General Population Tour Program (June-September)
Bull Run Watershed tours offer the public a unique opportunity to see firsthand how Portland's drinking water travels from forest to faucet. The Water Resources Education Assistant will help with tour scheduling, registration, and communication with tour participants. They will occasionally assist other education staff in facilitating a watershed tour.
Community Events (on-going)
In collaboration with other Water Bureau work groups, city bureaus, local governments, and community organizations, the Education Team supports planning and implementation of education and outreach events in the Portland area. The Water Resources Education Assistant will have the opportunity to help with these events, educating youth and adults in a wide variety of water-related topics.
On-Going Duties
Assist with the creation and editing of educational materials and social media content, as needed.
Assist with administrative tasks, as needed.

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
Ability to teach and lead students, ranging from 3rd grade through adult learners, in both indoor and outdoor educational settings.
Ability to communicate and collaborate with individuals from a variety of different backgrounds and communication styles, including those from historically underserved communities. Facilitate inclusive participation in programs and activities; communicate cross-culturally and with thoughtful curiosity and humility, promoting a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.
Ability to effectively and safely navigate and work in remote areas. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Some of this work may be on uneven terrain. This includes, but is not limited to, walking on uneven terrain and in and/or next to swift-flowing water.
Ability to recognize and respond to safety and emergency situations.
Ability and knowledge of standard office operating procedures, such as basic computer
usage, typing, and filing.

Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are helpful, but not required :
1-3 years of experience doing outdoor/experiential education with K-12 students and/or adult learners.

Knowledge of Pacific Northwest natural history
